Editor's Notes
Are you struggling to stay on top of your job search? Do you need help in prioritizing your time?
There are six areas to every job search. 1. Must have a target to even start. - sign up for my newsletter and you will receive access to my 1 hour webinar about target 2. Tools - do you know the tools that are effective for your target and time table? Budget, online and offline resources, estate? 3. Timeline - what is your timeline? How are you managing it? Are you tracking your progress? 4. Tackle Daily - daily monitoring of your search, how to not become overwhelmed by it all 5. Talk your story - tell people why you bring value to their organizations. We all have a story to tell. Remember the job exists for a reason. Buying motivators. 6. Take the job - contract or not - if it meets your key priorities, negotiate, then take it. Close the deal For today’s purposes we are going to assume you have a target and know the tools. I am going to address TIMELINE and TACKLE DAILY for this session. I see many job seekers fall down on this area.
The key to planning your search is to plan. Sit down and write out the steps you will take and when and how. Write the tasks in the left column. Break them down to as small a step as you can, as in project plan B or in more general terms but still a functional task, such as in project plan A. All tasks listed must be defined enough to be able to be checked off all by itself.
NOW TAKE 10 MINUTES TO SCETCH UP A PLAN - TALK TO A NEIGHBOR Note: on this plan, the weeks can go out as far as you want. So it breaks the search down by weekly segments. Can look similar to an Gantt Chart when you are done. This ensures a step is not missed or overlooked and that all chosen steps are assigned to the appropriate parties.
Move items from project plan to your calendar.
Go to an associate, career coach / counselor, outplacement etc. Do you have a friend that is good at keeping people accountable? Give them your plan and ask them to help you stay on target - meet weekly if needed to review your progress What a career coach does - an objective person that helps keep you on target
You can succeed and get to your next job faster with focus
