Running Resillient Workloads with Istio - OpenInfra Days 2019
Remember how cool Kubernetes seemed when you first started using it? A simple, easy API for scalable compute in any cloud: just a Deployment and a Service and you’re done! But as you use it more, you learn that this isn’t really enough. A production system needs requests and limits, liveness checks, HPAs, PDBs, PSPs, etc.
The same is true for Istio, which can solve a lot of the problems with microservices out of the box, but isn’t magic. When you get beyond playing with bookinfo, more configuration is needed to get the most out of it.
In this talk I’ll show you how to:
Identify app versions, deploy canaries and run A/B tests
Set timeouts
Configure retries, with exponential backoff
Enforce rate limits
Enable circuit breakers
Inject faults for testing

This document discusses how Freie Netze München used IPFIX and ElastiFlow to monitor their network traffic and make better peering decisions. They exported encrypted IPFIX data from DE-CIX routers via UDP to ElastiFlow, which provided analytics on traffic flows. This identified their top sources and destinations by ASN, mainly eyeball networks, cloud providers, and content providers. Freie Netze München was then able to set up direct peering sessions with most of these ASNs to improve routing resilience and learn more about their network traffic patterns.

TC Flower Offload
The TC Flower Classifier allows control of packets based on flows determined by matching of well-known packet fields and metadata. This is inspired by similar flow classification described by OpenFlow and implemented by Open vSwitch. Offload of the TC Flower classifier and related modules provides a powerful mechanism to both increase throughput and reduce CPU utilisation for users of such flow-based systems. This presentation will give an overview of the evolution of offload of the TC Flower classifier: where it came from, the current status and possible future directions.
Skydive, real-time network analyzer

Offloading TC Rules on OVS Internal Ports
This document discusses two approaches to allowing traffic control (TC) rules to offload rules on internal ports in Open vSwitch (OVS). The first approach is to add a TC ingress hook to OVS internal port modules so the rules can be applied. The second approach is to offload rules as egress hooks, which achieves the same outcome as ingress hooks on internal ports by generating an OVS ingress action when egressing an internal port. Currently, TC rules outputting to an internal port are not offloaded, so this bypasses the OVS kernel datapath. The proposed approaches aim to address this by allowing hardware offload of rules on internal ports.

Quality of Service is a difficult problem in WebRTC. You spend hours perfecting
your design in the lab. You test in different network conditions and try your best.
A week later the reports trickle in of different customers having unreproducable issues.
Then when you go to research you can't even find consensus on how to solve these problems.
Most companies don’t discuss how they do it, and those that do don’t agree.
This talk is about my time building media experiences with WebRTC. The lessons I
have learned, and mistakes along the way. This talk doesn’t discuss signaling, connectivity
or security. If you are interested in those topics check out WebRTC for the Curious.

Skydive is a real-time network topology and protocols analyzer that provides non-intrusive monitoring of SDNs. It collects data from agents running on nodes through southbound APIs and topology queries to analyze flows and topology in an SDN-agnostic manner. Skydive aims to help troubleshoot complex SDN issues by providing visibility into where packets are dropped, fragmented, or experiencing congestion across overlays, underlays, and the control and data planes.
LF_OVS_17_OVN and Containers - An update.
This document discusses integrating Open vSwitch (OVS) and Open Virtual Network (OVN) with containers and orchestrators like Docker and Kubernetes. It provides examples of using OVS and OVN commands to connect containers running in different namespaces to logical switches managed by OVN. LF_OVS_17_LXC Linux Containers over Open vSwitch
This document discusses using LXC Linux containers over Open vSwitch (OVS) for container networking. Ryu SDN Framework

But what is cloud identity?
The gist is that cloud identity enables a person's "user" information to be distributed on the Internet. This solves a common problem: the need to maintain a username at every website. In this paradigm shift, identity information is not stored within each website, but accessed on the wire as needed. Websites become "relying parties" (RPs) using the information of trusted "identity providers" (IdPs). Although it has taken a while, finally the recipe for federated identity seems clear.

Currently, there is a growing demand for standardization and interoperability in energy data and modeling. Open source standards and specifications within the energy sector can also alleviate challenges associated with data fragmentation, transparency, and accessibility. At the same time, it is crucial to consider privacy and security concerns throughout the development of open source platforms.
This webinar will delve into the motivations behind establishing LF Energy’s Carbon Data Specification Consortium. It will provide an overview of the draft specifications and the ongoing progress made by the respective working groups.
Three primary specifications will be discussed:
-Discovery and client registration, emphasizing transparent processes and secure and private access
-Customer data, centering around customer tariffs, bills, energy usage, and full consumption disclosure
-Power systems data, focusing on grid data, inclusive of transmission and distribution networks, generation, intergrid power flows, and market settlement data

Essentials of Automations: Exploring Attributes & Automation Parameters
Building automations in FME Flow can save time, money, and help businesses scale by eliminating data silos and providing data to stakeholders in real-time. One essential component to orchestrating complex automations is the use of attributes & automation parameters (both formerly known as “keys”). In fact, it’s unlikely you’ll ever build an Automation without using these components, but what exactly are they?
Attributes & automation parameters enable the automation author to pass data values from one automation component to the next. During this webinar, our FME Flow Specialists will cover leveraging the three types of these output attributes & parameters in FME Flow: Event, Custom, and Automation. As a bonus, they’ll also be making use of the Split-Merge Block functionality.
You’ll leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to maximize the potential of automations by making use of attributes & automation parameters, with the ultimate goal of setting your enterprise integration workflows up on autopilot.
Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
