This document summarizes research on 5th grade Latino students' perceptions of bilingualism. Four main themes emerged from students' writings: communicative purposes, academic purposes, brokering, and cultural advantages. Students reported using Spanish at home and in their community, and English at school and with friends. Additional studies with high school and 5th grade students confirmed these findings, with most recognizing benefits of bilingualism for college, careers, and translation, but not necessarily for daily communication.
