Changing life with
plantation forests
Prior to the year 2005, Mr. Pham Van Dung and his 5 family members had been living in the
mountainous area of Ba Dinh commune, Ba To district, Quang Ngai province. Their only source
of income was from shifting cultivation, which made their life extremely difficulty.
In 2005, Mr. Dung joined the Forest Sector Development Project (FSDP) and was supported with
a loan to establish four hectares of Acacia hybrid. With the project’s support, he gradually mas -
tered plantation techniques and in 2012 he harvested 130 tons/ha with the price of VND 90
million/ha on average. The income from the forest plantation helped him pay back the bank
loan, build a new wooden house to replace his old thatched-roof cottage and purchase necessary
appliances for his family.
