The Grapes of Wrath on Poverty
The Problem! “ It is poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish.” -Mother Teresa of Calcutta - extreme poverty as living on less than US$ 1 per day, and moderate poverty as less than $2 a day, estimating that "in 2001, 1.1 billion people had consumption levels below $1 a day and 2.7 billion lived on less than $2 a day."
The Facts “ It is a tragic mix-up when the United States spends $500,000 for every enemy soldier killed, and only $53 annually on the victims of poverty.” -Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. -The official poverty rate in 2006 was 12.3 percent; that’s 36.5 million people! -For children under 18 years old and people aged 18 to 64, the poverty rates (17.4 percent and 10.8 percent, respectively) and the numbers in poverty (12.8 million and 20.2 million, respectively) remained statistically unchanged from 2005. Statistics from the United States government Census Bureau.
A Solution? “ Poverty is the parent of revolution” -Aristotle -There are many options to solving this worldwide problem, the most drastic and historically effective being a mass revolution. -However, there are also options that are easily doable (and less severe) like donating food or you spare time to local shelters and food pantry's, becoming involved in your city’s, state’s, and national politics, and even paying attention to how much food you eat and how much you throw away. On average, in any given day, people throw away enough food to provide an entire African village with food for a day; that’s a lot of uneaten food!
