Barbara Bush was born in 1925 in Rye, New York and raised by her single father. She attended Ashley Hall and Smith College and later became the First Lady as the wife of President George H. W. Bush. As First Lady, Barbara Bush founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy which promotes literacy programs.
