The crank shaft is part of the engine and converts the pistons' reciprocating motion into rotational motion. The intermediate shaft connects the crank shaft to the propeller shaft. The propeller shaft has a conical end to make mounting the propeller easier and transmits propulsion forces from the propeller to the ship's hull.
