Are you a Reader or a Builder

Over the past 20 years, I’ve been in hiring roles and have received thousands of resumes from new college graduates. I’ve interviewed many for real jobs and done my share of informational interviews. Sometimes I’ve hired people into entry-level positions. More often though, I haven’t.

Content within this deck was discovered on a trip to Athens, Greece where I stayed at the home of an architect. Amongst the hundreds of books he had, I chanced upon this gem - "Letter to a Young Architect" - which I've collated and will share with you here.
Contained within that book was the author's life learnings, to be handed down to future architects. But what surprised me was that, on every page, each of those learnings could be directly applied to advertising as well. And such good lessons they were that I felt compelled to keep a record of those lessons, for my own learning and to share with others.

As a design leader, how do you balance your team’s frustrations and continue to motivate them to deliver quality user experiences?

Tiny Frogs
A group of tiny frogs held a race to climb a very tall tower. A crowd gathered and doubted the frogs' ability to reach the top, with many saying it was too difficult. As the race began, most of the frogs collapsed from exhaustion except one, who continued climbing higher. This lone frog refused to give up while all the others did. In the end, it was the only frog to reach the top. It was revealed that the winning frog was deaf, so it couldn't hear the crowd's negative comments doubting it would succeed. The story's message encourages being positive and deaf to those who say you can't achieve your dreams.

We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
