I'M FINE
I’m not sure how I really
feel.
“Fine” is the safety
blanket of feelings. I may
fall back on this response
to avoid further
questions or making you
feel uncomfortable.

Nobody would
understand how I’m
really feeling.
I don't want to project my
hurt onto you. If I talk
about it, I feel vulnerable,
uncomfortable and even
threatened.

I don’t want to talk about
it.
Talking about feelings can
feel like opening wounds.
The risk of exposing my
true feelings compounded
with the risk of receiving
an uninformed response
can result in flat out
avoidance.

I feel
awful/scared/ashamed/
confused/hurt….
But how do I share this?
These feelings
overwhelm me and I
can't answer a simple
question such as, “how
are you?”

<sigh>
The internal tiredness,
disappointment and/or
sadness that I feel gets
summed up as, “<sigh> I’m
fine.”
The next time you ask someone how they are, think
about the response you’re already anticipating.
What if we didn’t settle for “ ne?"
What if we stop, take a moment and ask with true
sincerity how someone is doing.
Or better yet, ask how they are feeling.
We could all bene t from slowing down, taking an
earnest interest in others as well as honestly
evaluating how we ourselves are doing.

5 things I mean when I say "I'm fine"

  • 1. 5THINGS I REALLY MEAN WHEN I SAY WHEN "I'M FINE" 1 I'M FINE I’m not sure how I really feel. “Fine” is the safety blanket of feelings. I may fall back on this response to avoid further questions or making you feel uncomfortable. 2 Nobody would understand how I’m really feeling. I don't want to project my hurt onto you. If I talk about it, I feel vulnerable, uncomfortable and even threatened. 3 I don’t want to talk about it. Talking about feelings can feel like opening wounds. The risk of exposing my true feelings compounded with the risk of receiving an uninformed response can result in flat out avoidance. 4 I feel awful/scared/ashamed/ confused/hurt…. But how do I share this? These feelings overwhelm me and I can't answer a simple question such as, “how are you?” 5 <sigh> The internal tiredness, disappointment and/or sadness that I feel gets summed up as, “<sigh> I’m fine.” The next time you ask someone how they are, think about the response you’re already anticipating. What if we didn’t settle for “ ne?" What if we stop, take a moment and ask with true sincerity how someone is doing. Or better yet, ask how they are feeling. We could all bene t from slowing down, taking an earnest interest in others as well as honestly evaluating how we ourselves are doing. I'M FINE I'M FINE I'M FINE I'M FINE I'M FINE 8 3 1 1 W .
