The colour scheme on a magazine is very
important because depending on the colours it
will attract a different audience. A magazine
with dark and neutralized colours and with not
many photos is more likely to attract an older
audience with people who are less interested
in the look of the magazine. However a
magazine that has a lot of photos and bright
colours is more likely to appeal to a younger
audience.

3. Front cover
Through my research I went through multiple different ideas for my
final product, at first I wanted to do a whole magazine dedicated to
animal cruelty in relation to makeup testing, then I realised that this
wasn’t like a realistic idea. So, I decided to create a nature magazine
and then have a featured double page spread about testing makeup
on animals. Also, by doing a nature magazine this gives me more of
an opportunity to create a more interesting front cover.
I wanted to use artistic, interesting photos for the front cover
because usually a nature magazine would be targeted at an older
audience, but I think if I can make the appearance of the magazine
young and modern then it will entice a younger audience and then
hopefully educate younger audience about important things
happening to the world.
For a nature magazine I first researched nature on
google image to see what is stereotypically
associated with nature, that a typical nature
magazine reader would look out for. From my
search there was a lot of pictures of scenery, with
blue skies and green grass, in a few pictures there
was also a source of water. So from this I decided
to take inspiration from the grass in the pictures
and research flowers. But as I said earlier I didn’t
want a stereotypical magazine cover photo, like a
plain flower because this would attract the wrong
type of audience. But I wanted to use flowers
because I think it is the perfect association with
nature, and it also goes well with my magazine
title ‘Harmony’.
So I thought of different ways that I could
introduce flowers to my front cover. I thought
about using a model and trying to entwine the
flower with the model, I immediately thought
that I could put flower in hair, to look in keeping
with the nature theme and this would give me an
opportunity to take professional photos, because
in pat projects I have filmed using the camera but
I haven’t conducted a photoshoot or
concentrated on using the camera for just
photographs.
During research I found - on different platforms of
social media, like Instagram and Pinterest - that a
craze at one point was to put edible flowers in ice
cubes and then wait till they’ve frozen and then
have them in your drinks for style. I thought seen as
it was the start of spring it would be an appropriate
article to have on the front cover to attract peoples
attention. I also thought it would be a good idea
because it is directly associated with nature and it is
also a fun article. I think its clever to have on the
front because even though the process of making
flowers ice cubes I obviously quite straightforward
the article can include different flowers that would
go well together and what size flower to put in the
ice try, and different ice tray you can use.

4. Presentation, front cover and double
page spread
While I was researching different magazines I saw a wide range of different styles and
different structures depending on the topic of the magazine and what audience the
magazine was trying to approach. For my topic, nature, all the magazines followed
the same layout, with a picture of animal or plant then with articles around the cover.
The type of article was always the same, e.g ‘Reefs under threat’. For my magazine I
wanted to include a modern twist so that it would attract a different, younger
audience. For this I decide to use different shapes and pastel colours. And instead of
just having the articles in a usual column format I think I’m going to write it in
different shaped boxes and in different ways to keep the reader interested.
On google I searched ‘modern magazines and
found different examples of magazines that
are modern. They all have a minimalistic feel,
with a white background and then the writing
on different parts of the page. On each page
the colours are not energetic they are calm
and the same ones are repeated.
I think the fonts in a magazine are important because they set the tone for the
magazine, for example if the magazine had a boring, small font then it would
bore the reader and they would be more likely to stop reading. Also, if a
magazine has a sophisticated font it will sub-consciously make the reader think
the magazine is more complex and fashionable, e.g. Vogue. So on a website
called ‘dafonts’ I researched different fonts that I could use in my magazine to
make it look as interesting and professional as possible.
