Communication in Harsh IoT Environments
Wireless Communication in the IoT
IoT systems for data-intensive computing applications used in harsh industrial
applications carry with them a range of reliability and security issues for the
network components. Secure data transmission and the wireless transport of
data is a precondition for any device to be able to communicate within the
mobile Internet of Things.
Terrestrial standards include WLAN (Wi-Fi), WWAN with GSM (2G), GSM-R,
UMTS (3G), LTE (4G), or WPAN with Bluetooth, ZigBee etc. Satellites support data
communication as well as global positioning using GPS, GLONASS, Galileo or
BeiDou.
Moving Devices in the IoT
It is considerably more difficult to implement reliable wireless transmission for a
rapidly moving vehicle like a train, a bus, or a plane (vehicle-to-vehicle and
vehicle-to-land communication). Large amounts of data need to be transferred at
high speeds, over long distances and while driving through tunnels, mostly in
real-time.
Typical examples are passenger information systems, multimedia access units,
surveillance systems for the recording and management of camera data, or
service systems with diagnosis and maintenance functions.

SCADA System for Fleet Management

SCADA System for Fleet Management
The custom-specific, fanless, SCADA-based automotive data logger is used to
record and pre-process information in trucks and busses. Information from one,
or several, vehicles is sent to the headquarters via UMTS, indicating the vehicle’s
status and position as well as when it’s next scheduled maintenance is due.
Application-specific functions, such as CAN bus interfaces, are implemented as IP
cores in the onboard FPGA.

WLAN Server for Company Buses
The CompactPCI WLAN server supplies employees during their commute with
passenger internet, local portals and passenger information services. The
complete Wi-Fi based entertainment solution uses F223 carrier cards for two
PCIe Mini Cards and up to 18 SIM cards on one board. In case the data volume of
one SIM card is depleted, an easy change to the next SIM card is possible.

Infotainment with WLAN Streaming
The customized entertainment-focused box PC delivers media content such as
films, music and online newspapers via an integrated WLAN access point to the
user's display or own mobile devices in long-distance coaches. The conduction
cooled box PC comes with integrated hot-pluggable storage shuttles, an
integrated Ethernet switch with PoE support and complies with E-mark
requirements.

Passenger Comfort and Diagnostic Data
This wireless service system takes care of passenger comfort functions like
video/audio streaming, information about the tour schedule via a wireless
customer portal as well as for reservation-, master- and diagnostic data
recording and transmitting and analyzing passenger information. The system is
based on MEN COTS products: the CompactPCI Serial multicore CPU board with
an PCI Express Mini Card carrier providing the UMTS and WLAN functionality and
an interface card for GPS and serial I/O.

Oilfield Server Platform and Router
This robust server platform is installed directly on the drilling sites and
communicates with the operator’s data processing center in real time from here
via GSM, relaying all the data relating to the position of the drill head, resistance
in the drilling mud, as well as general function and error analyses. The powerful
computer with 200 W of waste heat use three times conduction cooling frames
and housings to ensure sufficient heat dissipation and protection against the
rough sea.

Wireless Communication in the IoT IoT systems for data-intensive computing applications used in harsh industrial applications carry with them a range of reliability and security issues for the network components. Secure data transmission and the wireless transport of data is a precondition for any device to be able to communicate within the mobile Internet of Things. Terrestrial standards include WLAN (Wi-Fi), WWAN with GSM (2G), GSM-R, UMTS (3G), LTE (4G), or WPAN with Bluetooth, ZigBee etc. Satellites support data communication as well as global positioning using GPS, GLONASS, Galileo or BeiDou.

Moving Devices in the IoT It is considerably more difficult to implement reliable wireless transmission for a rapidly moving vehicle like a train, a bus, or a plane (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-land communication). Large amounts of data need to be transferred at high speeds, over long distances and while driving through tunnels, mostly in real-time. Typical examples are passenger information systems, multimedia access units, surveillance systems for the recording and management of camera data, or service systems with diagnosis and maintenance functions.

  • 6. 6 SCADA System for Fleet Management The custom-specific, fanless, SCADA-based automotive data logger is used to record and pre-process information in trucks and busses. Information from one, or several, vehicles is sent to the headquarters via UMTS, indicating the vehicle’s status and position as well as when it’s next scheduled maintenance is due.
