networks.

in the router, thus making room for more devices on the network –
a key aspect of the the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
Creating a highly reliable and efficient processing environment
virtually anywhere to run local monitoring and data analysis
applications is easy and cost effective with the new RUGGEDCOM
VPE1400 virtual processing engine.
3. Taking your intelligence to the network edge
Ideally suited for numerous industries, especially those requiring
rugged hardware and reliable communications, the RUGGEDCOM
VPE1400 virtual environment in the RUGGEDCOM RX1400 router
provides robust network stability and efficiency, allowing you to
take your intelligence to the edge.

5. Until now, on-site data processing required the installation of
separate hardware in addition to the routers. The RUGGEDCOM
VPE1400 is a software that partitions off a separate virtual
environment in the router where users can install a Linux
operating system and load their own self-generated programs or
those of service providers.
The partitions ensure that the programs never interfere with
actual router operation – not even if the programs malfunction
and, for example, take up too much processor power. The virtual
environment enables an application to connect via all network
interfaces on the RUGGEDCOM RX1400 router – LTE, copper, fiber-
optic – and with serial transmission interfaces. Special application
interfaces also enable communication with devices integrated
into SCADA systems for control and monitoring purposes.
This new software is part of the trend toward communication
networks with distributed computing capacities in which, as much
as possible, data is processed on site rather than centrally.
Experts are referring to “fog” or “edge computing.” Such
technologies are a key requirement for integrating a growing
number of devices into an ever more distributed Industrial
Internet of Things and operating them efficiently.
6. Robust, cost-effective platform solution for 3rd party applications
Eliminates hardware NRE costs for application developers
Shortens time to market of new applications
Applications can be used to distribute intelligence throughout the
network
Reduces need for operational data collection and centralized
storage
Increases network stability through reduced control system
latency
Integrated API suite for multi-protocol device communication
Minimizes need for extensive SCADA protocol knowledge and
experience to communicate with hosts and devices
Supports standard Linux-based development platforms
Requires no special tool sets or training by developers
Ensures network and application management tool consistency
7. Whether for electrical power, oil and gas, transportation or other
applications, RUGGEDCOM VPE1400 technology provides a highly
robust and cost-effective communications platform.
In addition to eliminating transmission bottlenecks and making
communications more secure, the RUGGEDCOM VPE1400 also
contributes to a more efficient use of network capacity. In other
situations it frees up bandwidth for transmitting additional
information. Such a solution is especially beneficial, for example, for
widely distributed communication networks such as those used in
traffic management or to control smart grids. These applications
employ numerous sensors that are sometimes connected to the
control center over long distances and transmit via connections –
cable, fiber-optic, or cellular radio – with different transmission
capacities.
8. A router that has continuously
transmitted data from a solar panel
controller now analyzes this
information on site. The control center
is notified only if these values exceed
a defined threshold.
Remote access to automated parking
lots where cars can only access if the
license plate is listed. The image
processing of the camera making
pictures from the license plate can be
done on-site and only the text data
needs to be checked with the central
database. This helps saving bandwidth
and ultimately reduce costs.
