MEN’s Rugged Industrial Ethernet Switch Family
5. 1. What does “RUGGED INDUSTRIAL” stand for?
» All MEN switch products are developed and qualified for an operation
temperature between -40 and +85°C. Switch devices typically provide
-40 to +70°C, with 10 minutes up to +85°C, according to the EN
50155 Tx railway norm. All components are using heat sinks, natural
convection cooling or conductive cooling instead of fans.
» To prevent from humidity and dust, the switch boards are prepared
for conformal coating, while the electronics inside the box devices is
already coated.
6. 1. What does “RUGGED INDUSTRIAL” stand for?
» To prevent from shock and vibration damages, all components on the
switch boards and devices are soldered down, Ethernet port connectors
are available as rugged M12 variants and the cabling inside the devices
is reduced to a minimum.
» The advantage of this kind of ruggedization also for Ethernet switches
lies in a reliable operation, a longer product life and a drastically re-
duced maintenance overhead.
7. 2.
Can I “plug play” MEN Ethernet switches
in my application?
8. The use of standard components and industry standard platforms for the
MEN switches make them open to communicate with the whole world of
Ethernet hardware, software and protocols:
» CompactPCI and CompactPCI Serial embedded hardware standards
» 10/100/1000 Mbit/s Base-T and SX Ethernet copper and fiber
standards
» ITU-T G.8032 and ITU-T G.8031 protection switching instead of
proprietary rings
2. Can I “plug play” MEN Ethernet switches in my application?
9. » Commonly agreed protocols and interfaces that integrate in existing
management platforms (SNMP v1,2c,3 / RMON / sFlow /
HTTP(s) / Telnet / SSH / JSON etc)
» Microsemi (Vitesse) configuration and management firmware
» And for the next generation: HSR/TSN switching, IEC62439-3 protocol
2. Can I “plug play” MEN Ethernet switches in my application?
11. » Fully managed and smart-managed board-level Ethernet switches
are provided on the robust and modular PICMG standard platform
CompactPCI Serial and can be used in every kind of mission-critical
application – whether it be in transportation (rail public transport,
avionics, marine, off-road heavy vehicles) or in industrial automation,
power energy, and medical engineering.
» Ethernet switch devices – on the one hand – have been developed for
critical automation and energy markets. Based on a CompactPCI Serial
environment, the number and configuration of ports can be flexibly
adapted to the application, using e.g. simpler power supplies and
common RJ45 instead of M12 connectors.
3. For which markets are MEN Ethernet switches optimized?
12. » Ethernet switch devices – on the other hand – have been designed for
the specific requirements of trains, light rail and metro vehicles, being
all fully compliant with the EN 50155 railway norm. Those application-
ready network boxes operate without fans, using conductive cooling to
transport the heat away from the electronics. They are also equipped
with ultra wide range power supplies, supporting interruption class S2.
3. For which markets are MEN Ethernet switches optimized?
13. 4.
How do the MEN Ethernet switches
meet the different network requirements?
14. The MEN Ethernet switch family is scalable between networks with the
following characteristics:
» Small, cost optimized networks without critical communication
require an unmanaged switch without configuration options,
redundancy, VLAN, QoS and PoE

4. How do the MEN Ethernet switches meet the different network requirements?
15. » Small networks with light management require at least a smart
managed switch with VLAN and QoS support, additionally PoE

» Medium sized networks with full featured protocol flexibility require
already a fully managed carrier grade Level 2 / Level 3 switch with
redundancy, ring structures, QoS and central or local management,
often also with PoE/PoE+

4. How do the MEN Ethernet switches meet the different network requirements?
16. » Big networks with full protocol flexibility and variable configuration
of the single switch ports require a modular - ideally open 19” platform
– in addition to a high-end Level 2 / Level 3 functionality

How do MEN Ethernet switches
help me to save cost?
18. » An efficient life-cycle management of the MEN switches together
with a standard life cycle of typically 10 years reduces the total cost
of ownership for premature hardware replacements and software
modification.
» Ruggedization and therefore a reliable operation of the MEN switches
– especially in harsh environments – leads to lower maintenance
efforts, e.g. caused by downtimes.
5. How do MEN Ethernet switches help me to save cost?
19. » All MEN switches – whether board-level or complete device –
are based on modular concepts that allow exact tailoring to the
application requirements, e.g.:
» With or without PoE+ support per device or even per port
» With RJ45 or M12 connectors, X- / A- and D-coded
» Unmanaged/smart managed or fully managed versions
» Scalable number of ports – from 4 ports on a 3U CompactPCI/Serial
board up to 28 ports in mixed configuration in a 19” system
5. How do MEN Ethernet switches help me to save cost?
20. » Based on standard industry platforms and protocols, the MEN
switches are open to communicate with standard hardware, firmware
and software on the market – avoiding a costly vendor-lock-in
situation.
