	 The Role of Philanthropy
with Barbara Harman, Catalogue for
Philanthropy
• Understanding philanthropy and
how foundations determine its
investment thesis/philosophy
• How and why does it fit in serving
the underserved, working together
across vertical solutions?
• How has philanthropy evolved to
respond in real-time to national crisis?
• How do we integrate more
philanthropy into economic and
community development?
9:30am THE BRIEFING

determinants of health.

Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and
Economic Development
Greater Washington Community Foundation
Washington, DC is a city of contrasts.
Compared to the rest of the country, we
have one of the highest concentrations
of wealth and one of the highest rates of
income inequality between black and white
residents that is felt across every sector,
from housing to health, from education to
jobs. How do we now align our work across
strategy and discipline to confront patterns
of inequity and create a more inclusive city
of shared prosperity? What do we leverage
the purchasing power of anchor institutions,
such as universities and hospitals, to grow
the local economy? What are some integrated
models that are working? How do we
accelerate big thinking and more resources to
bring about systemic change?
10:15am HOUSING
	 The Foundation
Washington is in the grip of a housing crisis
that defines who can live and thrive in
our city, and demands solutions. Housing
determines access to schools and healthcare.
Zip codes determine how we live. What more
can we do to reverse deepening patterns
of inequity linked to housing and lay the
groundwork for a truly inclusive city? How
do we create pathways that begin with
affordable ownership or rent which lead to
better outcomes in health, education and
quality of life? We will profile the concept of
the Community Land Trusts as a potential
integrated solution being developed East
of the River. This model allows residents to
take collective ownership of land, prevent
displacement and build long term health of
the community.
11:00am HEALTH
	 Place as a Determinant
Health disparities in the District of Columbia
are some of the nation’s highest. Medical
solutions alone will not change this. How
do we treat the underlying factors that
determine who gets sick and who gets
care - from access to housing , income, jobs
and quality education to the availability of
nutritious food, transportation, parks and
playgrounds? How do we better understand
how “where we live” matters to our health,
and use that as a guide to community driven
response and investment? More than a
decade in, what outcomes have we seen from
the Medical Homes DC project in providing
access in underserved neighborhoods to
comprehensive and continuous family and
patient-centered care?
11:45am EDUCATION
	 An Economic Investment
DC’s school year kicked off on a high note
with news about improved test scores
in charter and traditional schools alike,
and new initiatives adult and vocational
education -- positioning DC to emerge from
its chronic educational achievement gap
against national standards. But do the
gains go far enough? How does the concept
of “opportunity gap” give us a better
framework in which to address equity in our
schools? A vision that is not yet realized,
what more can stakeholders do to break the
cycle of inequity? Is educational opportunity
enough? Are we thinking differently about
and responding to the market need by
preparing students for the opportunities
available in today’s tech and information
economy? What integrated solutions have
worked from early childhood, vocational
to adult education? How has finance,
philanthropy and government budgets
worked, and worked together? How do we
accelerate the best models?
12:30pm LUNCH
1:30pm SMALL BUSINESS
	 Creating Employment,
	 Wealth, and Influence
Small businesses are powerful catalysts for
jobs, wealth creation, community renewal
and social equity. For low and moderate
income communities, employment from a
small business owner is what creates stability
for family. For the business owner, the
opportunity to grow is what creates his or her
wealth and influence to more fully engage
civically to impact their communities. Is
there enough will, opportunity and capital to
channel invest in women and minority-owned
businesses?
2:15pm SOCIAL INNOVATORS
	 Social Capital
Washington, DC was recently named as one
of the top three cities in the nation for
social entrepreneurship, a business model
that puts equal value on making money
and having a positive impact. Particularly,
among young people, DC is a destination
for social impactors. What kind of problems
are social entrepreneurs solving? Still In its
early stages, is the model delivering on the
promise, and how is it measured? How do
we raise awareness and capital for its growth,
especially to fuel women and minority
owned businesses? What sort of public
policies support this new direction? What
does an Impact Investor and philanthropist
want to know to play a stronger role in
sustaining this movement and to nurture this
untapped potential to provide innovative and
sustainable solutions to persistent problems?
3:15pm CREATIVE ECONOMY
	 As Community Development
Last years conference convened a sold
out audience of over 300 around the
topic Commerce, Culture and Community
Investment. We heard from key community
arts organizations, funders and developers
who validated the importance of creative
jobs and it’s economic role: The Creative
Economy. From a culinary mecca to media
arts and makers; and from city wide festivals
to theater stages, this sector has proven
its economic value. Now with local support
and momentum, how can creatives help
foster a culture of equity in DC to inspire
our collective sense of purpose, place
and perhaps policy to promote healthier
communities, and racial healing. What can
we learn from integrated solution institutions
such as THEARC which brings access to
artistic expression, social services, and high
quality education and recreation all under
one roof?

  • 2. 8:30am BREAKFAST & REGISTRATION 9:15am COFFEE and CONVERSATION The Role of Philanthropy with Barbara Harman, Catalogue for Philanthropy • Understanding philanthropy and how foundations determine its investment thesis/philosophy • How and why does it fit in serving the underserved, working together across vertical solutions? • How has philanthropy evolved to respond in real-time to national crisis? • How do we integrate more philanthropy into economic and community development? 9:30am THE BRIEFING Data Presentation DC Fiscal Policy Institute -- will help us articulate the problem presenting data overlaid with verticals of the social determinants of health. 9:45am OPENING PLENARY The Equity Equation Bread for the City N Street Village Coalition for Nonprofit Housing and Economic Development Greater Washington Community Foundation Washington, DC is a city of contrasts. Compared to the rest of the country, we have one of the highest concentrations of wealth and one of the highest rates of income inequality between black and white residents that is felt across every sector, from housing to health, from education to jobs. How do we now align our work across strategy and discipline to confront patterns of inequity and create a more inclusive city of shared prosperity? What do we leverage the purchasing power of anchor institutions, such as universities and hospitals, to grow the local economy? What are some integrated models that are working? How do we accelerate big thinking and more resources to bring about systemic change? 10:15am HOUSING The Foundation Washington is in the grip of a housing crisis that defines who can live and thrive in our city, and demands solutions. Housing determines access to schools and healthcare. Zip codes determine how we live. What more can we do to reverse deepening patterns of inequity linked to housing and lay the groundwork for a truly inclusive city? How do we create pathways that begin with affordable ownership or rent which lead to better outcomes in health, education and quality of life? We will profile the concept of the Community Land Trusts as a potential integrated solution being developed East of the River. This model allows residents to take collective ownership of land, prevent displacement and build long term health of the community. 11:00am HEALTH Place as a Determinant Health disparities in the District of Columbia are some of the nation’s highest. Medical solutions alone will not change this. How do we treat the underlying factors that determine who gets sick and who gets care - from access to housing , income, jobs and quality education to the availability of nutritious food, transportation, parks and playgrounds? How do we better understand how “where we live” matters to our health, and use that as a guide to community driven response and investment? More than a decade in, what outcomes have we seen from the Medical Homes DC project in providing access in underserved neighborhoods to comprehensive and continuous family and patient-centered care? 11:45am EDUCATION An Economic Investment DC’s school year kicked off on a high note with news about improved test scores in charter and traditional schools alike, and new initiatives adult and vocational education -- positioning DC to emerge from its chronic educational achievement gap against national standards. But do the gains go far enough? How does the concept of “opportunity gap” give us a better framework in which to address equity in our schools? A vision that is not yet realized, what more can stakeholders do to break the cycle of inequity? Is educational opportunity enough? Are we thinking differently about and responding to the market need by preparing students for the opportunities available in today’s tech and information economy? What integrated solutions have worked from early childhood, vocational to adult education? How has finance, philanthropy and government budgets worked, and worked together? How do we accelerate the best models? 12:30pm LUNCH 1:30pm SMALL BUSINESS Creating Employment, Wealth, and Influence Small businesses are powerful catalysts for jobs, wealth creation, community renewal and social equity. For low and moderate income communities, employment from a small business owner is what creates stability for family. For the business owner, the opportunity to grow is what creates his or her wealth and influence to more fully engage civically to impact their communities. Is there enough will, opportunity and capital to channel invest in women and minority-owned businesses? 2:15pm SOCIAL INNOVATORS Social Capital Washington, DC was recently named as one of the top three cities in the nation for social entrepreneurship, a business model that puts equal value on making money and having a positive impact. Particularly, among young people, DC is a destination for social impactors. What kind of problems are social entrepreneurs solving? Still In its early stages, is the model delivering on the promise, and how is it measured? How do we raise awareness and capital for its growth, especially to fuel women and minority owned businesses? What sort of public policies support this new direction? What does an Impact Investor and philanthropist want to know to play a stronger role in sustaining this movement and to nurture this untapped potential to provide innovative and sustainable solutions to persistent problems? 3:15pm CREATIVE ECONOMY As Community Development Last years conference convened a sold out audience of over 300 around the topic Commerce, Culture and Community Investment. We heard from key community arts organizations, funders and developers who validated the importance of creative jobs and it’s economic role: The Creative Economy. From a culinary mecca to media arts and makers; and from city wide festivals to theater stages, this sector has proven its economic value. Now with local support and momentum, how can creatives help foster a culture of equity in DC to inspire our collective sense of purpose, place and perhaps policy to promote healthier communities, and racial healing. What can we learn from integrated solution institutions such as THEARC which brings access to artistic expression, social services, and high quality education and recreation all under one roof? 4:00pm RECEPTION 35/35 Photo Exhibition PANEL DISCUSSIONS As City First approaches the milestone of its 25th Anniversary, we celebrate our partnerships and collective achievements as a community. Continuing in our tradition as an innovator in community development, engagement and impact, we are proud to kick off the 4th Community Development Finance Conference.
