W HAT IS A UTHENTIC
                                        L EADERSHIP
   a 2008 article published in the Journal of Management entitled “Authentic
    Leadership: Development and Validation of a Theory-Based Measure,” by Fred
    Walumbwa and 4 other co-authors.

A pattern of leader behavior that draws upon and promotes both
    positive psychological capacities and a positive ethical climate,
    to foster greater self-awareness, an internalized moral
    perspective, balanced processing of information, and relational
    transparency on the part of leaders working with followers,
    fostering positive self-development. (p. 94).
   I say blah blah blah??

    Seeks feedback to    improve interactions                                        with others




                                          Accurately                     escribes how others view his or her capabilities




   Says   exactly       what he or she means




                                   Is willing to   admit mistakes                                                                 when they are made

   Nurture the first few followers as equals

   Leadership is over glorified, the first follower turned the lone
    nut into a leader

   There is no movement without the first follower

   If we were all leaders, it would be really ineffective

   The first follower is the most courageous, and they show the
    others how to follow

422 managing people authentic leadership

  • 2. O UR TEXT SAYS  Be Yourself, we all have different backgrounds, different life experiences , and different role models Self Awareness is the key, they are not afraid to act the way they are  Howard Schultz, founder of Starbucks, embraces authentic leadership
  • 3. W HAT IS A UTHENTIC L EADERSHIP  a 2008 article published in the Journal of Management entitled “Authentic Leadership: Development and Validation of a Theory-Based Measure,” by Fred Walumbwa and 4 other co-authors. A pattern of leader behavior that draws upon and promotes both positive psychological capacities and a positive ethical climate, to foster greater self-awareness, an internalized moral perspective, balanced processing of information, and relational transparency on the part of leaders working with followers, fostering positive self-development. (p. 94).  I say blah blah blah??  Dr Simmons says “What?”
  • 4. Seeks feedback to improve interactions with others  Accurately escribes how others view his or her capabilities  Says exactly what he or she means  Is willing to admit mistakes when they are made  Demonstrates beliefs that are consistent with actions  Makes decisions based on his/her core beliefs  Solicits that challenge views his or her deeply held positions  Listens carefully to different points of view before coming to conclusions 
  • 5. J UST TELL ME WHAT IT MEANS …  ,  They lead in a manner that followers perceive and describe as authentic. Fred Walumbwa  Dr Simmons said … I think any follower that observed that behavior in a leader would simply call that good leadership.
  • 6. S O IS IT THE L EADERS OR THE F OLLOWERS ?????????

As a Leader, you might stand alone…for a while  Nurture the first few followers as equals  Make everything about the movement, not about you  Be EZ to follow  Leadership is over glorified, the first follower turned the lone nut into a leader  There is no movement without the first follower  If we were all leaders, it would be really ineffective  The first follower is the most courageous, and they show the others how to follow  Do You have the guts to be the first person to stand up and Join In
  • 8. A NDREW C OHEN , SPIRITUAL LEADER  if we aspire to be an authentic leader, we must always be willing to:  Stand alone  Live fearlessly  Act heroically  Want to be free and true more than anything else  Take unconditional responsibility for oneself  Face everything and avoid nothing  At all times see things impersonally  Live for a higher purpose

  • 12. WANT TO BE FREE AND TRUE MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE
  • 13. Take unconditional responsibility for oneself  Assemblyman Pat Delaney, GOP incumbent withdraws from election after email.  "deeply disappointed in my wife's decision to send that email," adding: "In an attempt to repair the serious damage this has caused to our marriage, and to protect our kids from public humiliation, I decided to leave public life.   • 17. SO I ASK YOU …  Authentic Leadership is awfully trendy…. Who are the authentic leaders; are they really authentic; are they just jumping on a bandwagon?  Is authentic leadership appropriate in all aspects of life? Example?? The military? Police Dept?  Are you willing to be an authentic leader?
