The Lesson
• This lesson is intended for 6th grade Special
Education Students. It is a short but stimulating
exercise that would really get the kids to think
creatively and critically. It incorporates universal
design because it uses both visual images and
text while also being accommodating and
flexible for all students to ensure that they retain
as much information as possible.
• The following slides will be screenshots from the
lesson that I have selected to use.
• What I like: the variety of ending sounds on the chart is a strength.
• What I would change: I would give the students a piece of paper so that they
can write the alphabet down and use it as a reference. I would also have them
group the words by the ending sound.
• What I like: the variety of characteristics of “Mom.”
• What I would add: other words and try and have the students find
characteristics that link “Mom” with another word.
• What I like: Having pictures to represent the items gives the students a visual
image to see which always helps me.
• What I would add: more examples and make them complex and not as
obvious. Clearly food is necessary, but other necessities like oxygen for
instance are not as obvious to students.
• What I like: Making the students do creative and outside the box exercises
like a crossword puzzle.
• What I would change: Make the terms related somehow, not just random
vocabulary words.
