Climate change, coupled with extreme
weather events, economic constraints, and
increased nomadism, requires us to think
of new ways to build, distribute, and
regulate homes and shelters. The changing
urban landscape can be seen as an
opportunity to redesign human settlements for
both resilience and inclusion.

When we look at player ideas as a whole we see a new trend: openness to,
and interest in, completely rethinking how we relate to and design our
settlements.
Ideas ranged from the adaptive, such as turning vehicles and cargo containers into
homes and creating biodomes to climate-mitigate public spaces, to the pragmatic,
such as acknowledging the permanence and uniqueness of slums by supporting
the innovative and entrepreneurial activities in these communities through property
rights and low-tech shelter upgrades.

The Hexayurt Project has designed a
way to turn standard building materials
such as plywood into zero-waste
modular homes called hexayurts.
These homes present a low-cost and
sustainable way to provide shelter for
refugees or weather migrants who may
not have access to homes for
extended periods of time.
Citihub Mandaluyong
Citihub Mandaluyong is a low-income dormitory
in the Philippines, built from shipping containers.
