SRC 221 ‐ Trimester 1 2009  
Assignment 1  
3D Digital Visualisation 
Microstation V8 XM 
 
The fundamental elements of 3D visualisation will be covered in this module, through an 
investigation & recreation of a chosen building part of the Waterfront campus.  
 
Each person is to choose a limited section of the Waterfront campus. It is up to you visit 
this area and study it for detail and building arrangement. Basic measurements, 
photographic evidence, details, and materials will be some the information that you are 
to gather. 
  
It is important that you select an area of high value to this assignment. Simply choosing 
an area that is not that interesting or unexciting could affect the grade you receive. 
 
What you will need to do when you visit your given area is to:  
‐ Study the geometry of the space and the objects it contains.  
‐ Examine the detail areas, how connections join and structural arrangements.  
‐ Make a list of all the known materials found within the space.  
‐ Observe the lighting conditions, where is the shadow forming at 9am or 3pm.  
‐ Consider all the possible furniture or vegetation found within your chosen area.  
 
Take as many relevant photos as possible to help gain an idea of the area when you are 
away from it. Some measuring and observation of the area may be done in groups, but 
each student must produce their own model and generate their own renderings at the 
end. No sharing of models or parts of models will be permitted. This rule will be strictly 
adhered to and may result in a fail for all students involved. 
 
     
    
Requirements: 
There is a two‐stage procedure for the requirements of this assignment: 
 
1a. BUILDING SECTION SELECTION Select an area with a base dimension of 10mx10m 
from anywhere within the university. In terms of height the section of building must 
cover from level D2 up to the roof on level D4. 
Information that needs to be included in your building section are: 
‐ Highly detailed building components; joinery, fittings, major bolts and plates 
‐ Mixed use of materials; wood, concrete, brick and glass. 
‐ Building columns between the 3 floor levels. 
‐ The roof construction. 
‐ Furniture and removable objects should also be found in your model. If there is none 
featured, appropriately add some furniture objects to give your model more detail. 
Selection of your building area should be finalised by the class in Week 2. If you are 
unsure on whether your selection is appropriate or detailed enough, discuss the section 
with a Tutor for further assistance. Students that fail to choose a building area by the 
class in Week 2 will be automatically assigned an area. 
 
Your selection will need to be presented within a word document that includes: 
‐ Name/ Location of your chosen building section. 
‐ Description of the area (few sentences). 
‐ Several photos of the area (small resolution). 
‐ List of the different types of materials found in that area. 
Name your document with the naming convention “surname_221.09 A1.doc” and submit to 
the drop box on DSO 
 
1b. INTERIM DIGITAL MODEL SUBMISSION All digital models must be submitted 5 
weeks into the project and include all geometry and ‘modelling’ of your chosen area. 
The submission simply needs to be your working Microstation file (.dgn) submitted with 
the following naming convention “surname_221.09 A1.dgn”. Submission will occur on DSO. 
 
 
The second part of the submission is a set of digital A4 pdf pages showing the following: 
 
2a. PROCESS PRESENTATION Explain the process in which you modelled your given 
building section. Give a small written explanation (1‐2 sentences) per image, explaining 
what you did, what tools were used, and any benefit/trouble you had modelling that 
particular piece of geometry. This presentation should be around 5 pages of a minimum 
of 10 images. Start recording this information early. 
 
2b. RENDER PRESENTATION The key to this assignment will be FIVE images you present 
from your model. These are to be rendered images of different aspects of the building 
section. Each image is to include the render process shown in class. Combine each image 
into a pdf document for ease of viewing. Use of interesting (realistic and creative) 
rendering techniques should be explored here. Take note of the main rendering settings 
of each image and list them within your presentation. 
 
Both pdf presentations should be combined into a single pdf document. Please use the 
following naming convention, “surname_221.09 A1.pdf” 
 
Extra credit will be given for creative presentations and page layouts. 
Submission:  
Assignment Part 1A must be submitted on DSO by March 17th
 @ 4:00pm. See the 
Requirements section for details on what is to be submitted. Please remember the 
necessary file naming conventions of your word document, “surname_221.09 A1.doc”

Assignment Part 2 must be submitted on a CD by May 08th 
@ 1:00pm. Submit the CD 
directly to the Red Submission Boxes outside D4.119.  
 
The CD should include all presentation and working files used in the assignment. Please 
use the following file naming conventions for the files found on the CD: 
Presentation PDF, “surname_221.09 A1.pdf” 
Folder of Digital Working Files, “surname Digital Files” 
 
The CD and case should be clearly labelled with your username, student number, date 
and unit code. The yellow submission slip should be taped to the inside of the case. 
Neatly tape the case shut with a single piece of sticky tape to prevent any CD’s falling 
out. 
 
 
All late submissions will occur a 10% per day penalty, as per the Unit Guide.  
Please see Unit Chair if requiring extension on any of the assignments. 
 
Assessment:  
The assessment will be set out to cover how successful your modelling skills were from 
what you have learned, as well as look at the resulting outcome of the your images and 
presentation.  
 
‐ Modelling of Building Geometry  30% (part 1‐10% / part 2‐20%) 
   Your digital model will be assessed, as well as the building geometry found in each rendered image  
‐ Visualisation of Rendered Images  50% 
   Each image is worth 10%, looking at the quality of view control, lighting and material application  
‐ Process Presentation     15% 
   Five pages explaining what you did, what tool was used, and any benefit/trouble you had. 
‐ Creative PDF Presentation    5% 
 
This assignment is worth 50% of the Final Unit Grade.  
 
Marks will be posted either in class or on DSO. Collection of Submission CD’s will be 
available after marks have been posted.
