This document discusses how some marketers criticize safelists as ineffective for advertising, but then promote their own list-building systems that function very similarly to safelists. Two examples are given: The List Machine, which allows users to build their own opt-in lists but only mail to members they subscribed, and Opportunity.com created by a successful marketer John Reese, which allows getting thousands of new leads each week in a similar way to safelists. The author argues these systems are really just "safelists with a twist", using opt-in mechanics but serving the same purpose as traditional safelists.
