RESEARCH
PART 2 – PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS
WE WILL GO
OVER THE
ASSESSMENT • Have your small info
TASK 1 booklets available and
               make notes as necessary
WHAT IS • Have you collected enough
NEXT?
PLANNING
             data?

           • How are you going to present
             the data?

           • How are you going to answer
             the written questions?
COLLECTION • Check everyone in the
OF DATA
group has a copy of the
               results for both St
               Leonard’s and Muriwai on
               a planning sheet.
             • You can also collect any
               secondary data you want
               ie aerial photos, photos ,
               climate data.
MARKING • You must have been seen
              collecting data
CRITERIA
(IN SMALL • Data tables are produced for
              both beaches. (hand in your
BOOKS) Muriwai books and data
              collection sheets as evidence)

            • For Merit these must be
              complete and accurate
• The planning and collection of
data can be done as a group
so you can work together on
  this. Everyone must have a
  copy however.

• From this point on all work is
  individual.
• You need to think about 3 different
ways you can present this data.
PRESENTATION
OF DATA Ideas are:
               • Graphs (each type of graph is one
                 presentation method)
               • Diagrams (ie how the process happens)
               • Profiles
               • Wind roses
               • Sketch maps and field sketches
               • Aerial photos and maps
               • Photos that are annotated
CHECK YOU • Axes labelled
              • Title appropriate
KNOW THE • North point for maps and
CONVENTIONS field sketch
NEEDED: • Frame for maps and sketches
              • Scale where appropriate (can
                estimate)
              • Key, labels or annotations
MARKING • ACHIEVED: One
CRITERIA presentation method with
             conventions

           • MERIT: Three presentation
             methods with conventions

           • EXCELLENCE: Three
             presentation methods with
             conventions and used to
             good effect ie comparison.
FOR THESE TO • They must relate to both
COUNT
                 beaches

               • They should allow comparison
                 to be seen

               • They must relate to research
ie annotate maps / photos to
                 link to research
WHEN TO DO • ONE of your presentations
THESE
               must be done in the
               assessment for authenticity
               purposes

             • The others may be done at
               home and glued into the
               correct section of the
               booklet.
ANALYSIS • Look at your data
QUESTION 1 -
WHAT
                 presentation. What does this
tell you? What are the trends?
                 Describe these using specific
                 information.

               • Remember it is about the
                 DIFFERENCES of the two
                 beaches. Say what these
                 differences are.
• Use your notes done in class to
ANALYSIS – help you here. This should explain
QUESTION 2 previous question occur.
WHY the trends you noted in the

- WHY • Again remember it is about the
                   DIFFERENCES of the two beaches

                 • Use ONLY the space you are given
for your answers. No extra sheets.
You may want to prepare for this
                   first and plan it out.
FINDINGS • These are simple statements
only – you do not need a lot
             of writing.

           • Go back to the original
             research questions and write
             about 2-3 sentences on each
             of them that answers them
             succinctly.
HOLISTIC • Task 1 is marked holistically –
MARKING that is you get the average of
             all the parts.

           • However, you MUST achieve
             each part.

           • Note that for data collection
you must hand in your raw
             data sheets and Muriwai
             booklets.
WHAT TO • All the correct materials like a ruler, are
          protractor etc for presentation you
                                                  pencil,
BRING doing
               • Your completed field booklet (if not already
                 in)
               • Your data collection sheets
               • Any photos, maps etc you want to include
               • Any presentations done at home –
remember ONE must be done in the
                 assessment that answers the Research
                 Question.
               • Your Muriwai class booklet
               • Check you have the rubric.
IN GENERAL: • This assessment is not hard if
you PREPARE for it before hand.

              • Always use the rubric to guide
you as to what must be done.

              • Give it your best shot.
                Remember there is NO
reassessment of this and you will
only be allowed to resubmit if a
border line case. This is not your
                choice but the markers.
• It must be completed at
  school. The booklet stays
  with your teacher.

• You have next week to
  complete this in. If you
  need an extra study
period then it is up to you
  to arrange this.
TIME FRAME • Up to 4 PERIODS TO DO THE
               RESEARCH PROJECT/ PART 2

             • 1 week more of Theory in Green
               books

             • 1 LESSON Background to PART 3

             • Up to 3 LESSONS TO WRITE UP
               PART 3. (Week 10)
TODAY

        • Check you have enough data

        • Check you have a copy of the data collected at
          both beaches on a sheet

        • Work out your presentation methods and
          what to do at home

        • Check you understand enough about the
analysis to ask for assistance if need be.

        • Start on your original presentation.
EVALUATION
(HALF PAGE EACH)

• A. Think about the findings you obtained from your research.
Were these what you expected? How useful do you think these
results were? To what extent did they allow you to make valid
  conclusions?

• B. Evaluate the research process. You may wish to consider when
you do these things whether your research methods and
approaches allowed you to collect sufficient, valid data and
whether your processing and/or presenting was accurate,
detailed and/or appropriate for your purposes. Discuss both the
  strengths and weaknesses.
• C. What are the alternative methods you could have taken to
research this issue? (collecting, analysing and presenting). What
would the effects of this have been on the resulting findings?
EVALUATION

• Achieved - Evaluate the research process or findings

• Merit – Evaluate the research process and findings

• Excellence – Critically evaluate the research process and findings
EVALUATION
(CONT)

• Divide your evaluation up into findings and the process.

• Critically evaluate means to examine alternative methods or
approaches to research and discuss the implications of such
  alternatives
FINDINGS

• Were they what you expected? Why or why not?

• What let you down? Were the conditions typical when you
  collected your information?
THE
RESEARCH
PROCESS

• What let you down in terms of the following:

• The field equipment
• Amount of data collected
• Methods of collecting data
• Timing of data collection
• The group collecting it – were all groups the same?
• Processing techniques.
ALTERNATIVE
METHODS

• If you had no budget or time constraints how could you have
  improved your research?

• What other methods could you have included?

• What would the implications of using these alternative methods
  have been?
WRITE UP

• You will be given 2 periods to write this up. Aim to do IGI’s one
period and the evaluation the next.

• If you run out of time you may use 1 other period including a
  study or lunchtime
WRITE UP
(CONT)

• You may only use the space provided – we are looking for quality
  not quantity!!

• You may NOT bring any other material to this section.

• The definitions of the GCs will be available on a handout sheet.
FINALLY!

• The aim is to prepare yourself for this assessment – you only get
1 try at this so give it your best shot!! Work out what you are
going to do at home before the assessment.

• GOOD LUCK!!!
