t was in a dusty vil-
lage of Gujarat called
Nadiad, that a child
was born on October
31, 1875. Hailing from
a simple family, the
child showed an inclination
to study and do
well and at a
time when handful of Indians
actually went for ‘modern educa-
tion’, this child learned and be-
came a barrister. However, little
did his family, friends and col-
leagues know, this individual, in
years to come, would have per-
haps the most profound impact
on India and its political unity,
for this was no other than the
Iron Man - Vallabhbhai Jhaverb-
hai Patel. Often called Sardar,
meaning “chief” in Hindi, Urdu,
and Persian, Patel acted as Home
Minister during the political in-
tegration of India and the Indo-
Pakistani War of 1947. It is to his
untiring efforts and tenacity that
the India of today exists as he did
the unimaginable work of get-
ting over five hundred royal
states accede to India. His com-
mitment to national integration
in the newly independent coun-
try was total and uncompromis-
ing, earning him the sobriquet
“Iron Man of India”. He is also
remembered as the “patron saint
of India’s civil servants” for hav-
ing established the modern All
India Services system. It was
therefore befitting that ‘The Stat-
ue of Unity’, the world’s tallest
statue being approximately 182
metres (597 ft) in height, was
dedicated to him on 31 October
2018 by Prime Minister Naren-
dra Modi, as an ode to the one
man whose will carved and en-
tire nation! First India remem-
bers the Iron man on his
birth anniversary!

is often called
the ‘modern
Iron Man’,
is in Guja-

India is a vibrant and inclusive
democracy, where the Christian
community has played a pivotal role
in areas like politics, films, business
 armed forces. Under Modi Ji’s
leadership India is marching ahead on
the path of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,
Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’.

Christians alleging conversions
and it is doubtful if the issue
would have come up between
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
and Pope Francis when the for-
mer met the head of Roman
Catholics at the Vatican. The
prime minister has invited the
Pope to visit India, a welcome
gesture. Though before the Pope
comes calling, a few of the viru-

I
amata Banerjee
has reached Goa
where, in a kind
of Gandhigiri,
she said she did
‘namaste’ with folded hands
to those who welcomed her
with black flags on arrival in
Panaji. That was a different
approach from the “Khela
hobe” gauntlet she threw in
front of Prime Minister Nar-
endra Modi in West Bengal
where a Jai Shri Ram slogan
at a non-political event drew
the battle-lines between Tri-
namool Congress and the
BJP. Besides black flags,
Mamata was welcomed by
Jai Shri Ram posters along-
side TMC posters claiming
“Goa’s New Dawn” (Goenchi
Navi Sakal). Despite being
made to bite the dust by Kol-
kata’s street-fighter in West
Bengal, BJP’s Amit Malviya
tweeted, “Mamata Banerjee’s
reputation of being anti-Hin-
du in Bengal has tailed her to
Goa, where she is being wel-
comed with giant size posters
of Jai Shri Ram.” Mamata
remained unruffled as she
mingled with fishermen in a
crowded fish market. To un-
derstand the political signifi-
cance of her move one has to
go back a few months back, in
July this year, when Mamata
met Congress chief Sonia
Gandhi sparking rumours of
Opposition unity. Her Goa
visit has virtually dashed all
hopes of Opposition unity as
she readies the TMC to take
on not only the BJP but also
the Congress, Sharad Pa-
war’s Nationalist Congress
Party
, Shiv Sena and the Aam
Aadmi Party, besides eight
regional parties. Although it
is unclear at this stage if the
TMC will ally with the NCP
and any of the regional par-
ties, Congress won’t be in her
scheme of things as she bids
for a pan-India presence.

M
he Indian Foreign Service
has produced a number of
authors. The most prominent
among them is Pavan K Var-
ma. He joined the IFS in 1976.
Retired 2012. His father was
an ICS officer.
His first book, “Ghalib-
The Man. The Times” was
published in 1989. I reviewed
his “Krishna. The Playful Di-
vine” and “The Great Indian
Middle Class”. Each one of
his dozen books has sold well.
His writings have an elegant
style, He avoids panache. I
hold the view that authorship
is a sacred calling. No room
for sultry flippancy in his
writings. To put it briefly
, Pa-
van Varma is an author of
high literary voltage.
I have recently read his lat-
est book, “The Great Hindu
Civilization: Achievement,
Neglect, Bias And The Way
Forward”, it is the work of an
accomplished scholar. Read-
ing it at times I felt like an
ignoramus.
Ilearntmuchfromthebook,
unusual for a man in his 93rd
year.Onecouldsayof Pavan’s,
“The Great Hindu Civiliza-
tion” “Har sans main kahani
hai. Har sans me afsana hai”
The six chapters are head-
ed. 1. Hindu Civilization:
Myth or Reality? 2. The Au-
dacity of thought (this re-
minded me of the title of Ba-
rack Obama’s book, “An Au-
dacity of Hope”. 3. The Realm
of Ideas. 4. The Islamic con-
quest. 5. British rule And Its
Aftermath. 6. The Challenge
of the Modern Republic.
Pavan is critical of Amar-
tya Sen’s views on many as-
pects of Hinduism. He is only
a little less severe on Sunil
Khilnani and Romila Thapar.
Here I shall address my-
self to chapter four and five.
How did we become enslaved
for nearly a thousand years,
after the spiritual achieve-
ments of the earlier two mil-
lenniums.
“The conquest of India by
foreigners starting with the
seventeen invasions of Mah-
mud Ghazni and the subse-
quent establishment of the
Ghurid empire in Delhi un-
der Mohammad Ghori in
1202, left India physically de-
stroyed and psychologically
traumatized. Hindu civiliza-
tion had never seen conquer-
ors like the Islamic Turkic
invaders, who were so blindly
committed to the destruction
of a culture, so fanatically
driven by a belief in the supe-
riority of their religion, so
unrelenting in their hatred
for to it and so passionate
about the need to convert the
unbelievers… The invaders
believed that they were the
chosen ones, the believers,
and that those who were not
were Kafirs, unbelievers, be-
yond the pale. The territory
of the Kafir was dubbed Dar-
al-Harb, a place to make it
Dar-al-Islam, the land of Is-
lam.,” writes Pavan.
Amartya Sen has written
in one of his books that, “the
slash and burn culture of the
Muslim invaders….devas-
tated several cities and ru-
ined many temples, includ-
ing particularly ones in Ma-
thura,KanaujandSomnath”.
According to Maulana
Minhaj-us-Siraj Mahmud
took away the idol from Som-
nath and had it broken in
four parts, one of these was
interred at the entrance of
the main mosque in Ghazni
and another at the gateways
of the Sultan’s palace.
The author concede that,
“Hindu and Muslim cultures
enriched each other in music,
poetry, architecture, paint-
ing, food, social behavior, cus-
toms and even religious prac-
tices. This is the foundation
of the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb
we speak today, which also
makes India unique.”
Pavan K Varma deals with
Sufism deftly and brilliantly
with the poets and saints in
different parts of India that
kept Hinduism alive. Shivaji
and Guru Gobind Singh are
given their due for not only
challenging the Islamic rul-
ersbutweakeningtheMughal
Empire. Tulsidas and Kabir
get pride of place, as does Jay-
adeva for his erotic Gita Gob-
ind, and Mirabai of course.
The opening sentence of
the chapter on British rule is,
“The establishment of Brit-
ish rule in India deeply im-
pactedHinducivilization and
India as a whole, not only for
the physical subjugation of
itspeopleandthehumiliation
it entailed, but for the coloni-
zationof theminditachieved.
While this is the goal of all
colonizingpowers,theBritish
were far more successful
practitioners of this policy
.”
Pavan rightly takes
Babington Macaulay to task,
who knew nothing about In-
dia’s culture, the spiritual
dimensions or its past. His
deeply offensive, “Minute on
Education”…”In one rhetori-
cal flourish, rubbished the
entire civilization heritage
of all Indians.”
Pavan Varma’s delineation
of the characters Raja Ram
Mohan Roy came as a sur-
prise. This is a book of very
high scholarship and im-
mensely educative.

Virat Kohli hits back at social media trolls who targetted pacer Mohammed
Shami after India’s loss to Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup in Dubai
‘SPINELESS PEOPLE’
Dubai: IndiacaptainVi-
rat Kohli has torn into
social media trolling,
throwing his weight be-
hind Mohammed Shami
who suffered vile abuse
after India’s loss to Paki-
stan in the team’s T20
World Cup opener. Kohli
spoke about backing
Shami “200 per cent”.
“There’s a good rea-
son why we are playing
onthefieldandnotsome
bunch of spineless peo-
ple on social media that
have no courage to actu-
ally speak to any indi-
vidual in person. They
hide behind their identi-
ties and go after people
through social media,
making fun of people
and that has become a
social entertainment in
today’s world, which is
so unfortunate and so
sad to see,” Kohli said at
the pre-match press con-
ference, with India play-
ing against New Zea-
land. “This is literally
the lowest level of hu-
man potential that one
can operate at and that’s
how I look at these peo-
ple,” he added.
AfterIndia’s10-wicket
loss to Pakistan, Shami
became the target-in-
chief for some people on
social media, based on
his religion. His captain
stood by him, while call-
ing the abuse pathetic.
“People take out their
frustrations because
they obviously have no
understanding of what
we do as individuals.
They have no under-
standing of how much

They have no under-
standing of the fact that
someone like Moham-

Chief Minister Mama-

ing that Prime Minis-
ter Narendra Modi will
become more powerful
as the grand old party
is not serious about
politics, and alleged
that the country is suf-
fering because that
party does not take de-
cisions.
Speaking about the
Congress, she said, “I
cannot say everything
right now because they
didn’t take politics seri-
ously. Modiji is going to
be more powerful be-
cause of the Congress...
If one cannot take
a decision, why should
the country suffer
for that?”
“They (Congress) got
an opportunity (in the
past). Instead of fight-
ing against BJP, they
contested against me in
my state. Don’t you
think when they con-
tested against me,
when they contest my
political party in Ben-
gal...,” she said.
Apparently targeting
the BJP-led central gov-
ernment, she said she
would not tolerate Del-

Aryan comes home 4 weeks after
arrest in drugs-on-cruise case
Mumbai: Aryan Khan,
the son of Shah Rukh
Khan, on Saturday left a
Mumbai jail after near-
ly four weeks. The
23-year-old was granted
bail on Thursday by the
Bombay High Court in
the drugs-on-cruise
case but spent two ad-
ditional nights in jail as
his bail papers missed
the 5:30 pm deadline on
Friday after an anxious
wait that went down to
seconds. Around 11 am,
surrounded by security
men, the star’s son got
into a waiting white
Range Rover and was
driven away, ending
days of speculation be-
hind his release.
Arthur Road jail offi-

out the bail papers from
the “bail box” in the

morning, setting off the
process for the star
son’s release.

‘Entrepreneurial mindset is
needed in nation’s progress’
New Delhi: Delhi Depu-
ty Chief Minister Man-
ish Sisodia said entrepre-
neurial mindset is not
only needed for running
a business but for every-
one so that they can con-
tribute in the nation’s
progress with innovative
thinking.
Sisodia inaugurated
an incubation centre at
the Ambedkar Universi-
ty and said it will “act as
a foundation for our fu-
ture entrepreneurs”.
“This incubation cen-
tre being started in the
Ambedkar University
will become the founda-
tion for new companies
to be developed by our
students and will give job
opportunities across the
world. Entrepreneurial
mindset is not only need-
ed to conduct a success-
ful business today, but
everyone should have
that mindset so that with
innovative thinking they
can contribute to the pro-
gress of the country,” he
said.
He said there are two
types of universities in
the world, first universi-
ties are those where the
students stand in line to
get employed after grad-
uating.
On the other hand,
there are universities
where there is competi-
tion among the compa-
nies giving jobs and it is
the companies that get in
a line to employ the stu-
dents of these universi-
ties, he said. “It is the
children of these univer-
sities who are later creat-
ing companies like Face-
book, Google and giving
jobs to people all over the
world. If we want to
make India a developed
country and a developed
economy, this dream can
be fulfilled only by our
schools and universi-
ties,” he added. —PTI

Lucknow: In the run
up to the assembly elec-
tions of UP, All parties
are engaged in balanc-
ing the arithmetic of
votes. In such a situa-
tion, the castes that
play a decisive role in
elections are bound to
come in the limelight.
One such popular com-
munity is ‘Rajbhar’.
According to the re-
port of the Social Jus-
tice Committee, Rajb-
har community is
around 3 percent of the
total population of UP.
But in more than a
hundred seats from
Purvanchal to Awadh,
their population is sig-
nificantly in a decisive
position in electoral
terms.
In the present sce-
nario, Om Prakash Ra-
jbhar is, seemingly, a
very effective leader of
the Rajbhars. He start-
ed a campaign to mobi-
lize this caste by form-
ing the Suheldev
Bharatiya Samaj Party
(SBSP) in the year 2002.
Although he could get
electoral success only
after an alliance with
the BJP in the 2017 as-
sembly elections, the
party could get four
seats. At the same time,
BJP also got electoral
benefit from this alli-
ance.
After Om Prakash
Rajbhar broke the alli-
ance, BJP made every
effort to maintain its
strong foothold among
Rajbhar voters. Anil
Rajbhar was given the
rank of cabinet minis-
ter. At the same time,
Sakaldeep Rajbhar of
Ballia was made Rajya
Sabha MP.
BSP also realising
the importance of this
caste appointed Bhim
Rajbhar as the state
president of the party.
It is obvious that all the
parties are eager to
woo the Rajbhar vot-
ers.
At the time of elec-
tions, on whom will
this community repose
trust, this picture is
not clear yet.
But as far as the mes-
sage is concerned, by
forging an alliance
with Omprakash Rajb-
har, the SP has definite-
ly gained an edge over
the rest of the parties.
In UP, Rajbhar voters have a decisive role in electoral terms

LS SPEAKER TO CELEBRATE DIWALI IN HIS CONSTITUENCY
ultilingual skills
that allow people to
switch from one lan-
guage to another or
mix languages are
often considered
more as a problem rather than
an asset.Much research has
documented the use of similar
pejorative terms elsewhere.
This includes bahasa rojak
(salad language) in Malaysia,
amulumala (verbal salad) in
Nigeria, and tuti futi (broken-
up) in the Panjabi-speaking
community in India. There are
also more neutral-sounding
terms like Singlish (Singa-
pore), Japlish (Japan),
Franglais (France/Canada),
Taglish (the Philippines) and
Hinglish (India) to label those
who mix multiple languages.
Some argue that such multi-
lingual practices reflect one’s
inability to think in a struc-
tured and systematic way. For-
mal education systems share a
similar view, looking at them as
a hindrance to students’ aca-
demic success as they are be-
lieved to delay the process of
learning school subjects. How-
ever, many studies have proven
otherwise.
Contrary to popular opin-
ion, this research shows mul-
tilingual practices do not have
any adverse effect on students’
academic achievement. Adopt-
ing a multilingual approach in
classrooms has proven to be
important in increasing stu-
dents’ academic performance
and even closing the achieve-
ment gap between students
living in cities and those in
villages. It has also been re-
ported that multilingual stu-
dents’ academic progress, par-
ticularly in reading and
maths, are two to three times
greater than that of their
monolingual counterparts.
There are at least three main
reasons why multilingual
skills give students an academ-
ic edge.
FIRST, MULTILINGUAL SKILLS
HELP STUDENTS TO ACTI-
VATE THEIR PRIOR
KNOWLEDGE, WHICH
POSITIVELY AFFECTS
THE PROCESS OF UN-
DERSTANDING NEW
KNOWLEDGE.
Prior knowledge
here refers to the
knowledge and ex-
periences that stu-
dents have previous-
ly acquired at
schools and home.
Much research has
shown that this pre-ex-
isting knowledge greatly
benefits them in understand-
ing new knowledge. This is evi-
denced by a growing number of
educational researchers and
practitioners grappling with
bridging the gap between home
and school contexts. Prior
knowledge plays a critical role in
increasing academic achieve-
ment mainly because it can har-
ness students’ curiosity
, increase
their attention, and help them to
interpret, evaluate and encode
new information. In other words,
failing to activate this prior
knowledge will likely result in
the students being demotivated
and less engaged in the lessons.
Prior knowledge is encoded in
the to-
tality of the students’ linguis-
tic repertoire, which consists of
words, phrases and sentences
from their first, second, third
languages, and so on. To put it
simply, to activate students’ pri-
or knowledge optimally
, teachers
must tap into the students’ full
linguistic repertoire. Imposing
the rule of only using one lan-
guage in the classroom will only
activate the knowledge embed-
ded in that one specific language,
if at all. This will make it a bit
harder for students to process
and understand new knowledge.
THIRD, MULTILINGUAL SKILLS HELP IN-
CREASE STUDENTS’ WELL-BEING,
WHICH IS A KEY FACTOR IN SUC-
CESSFUL LEARNING.
Well-being plays an important role
in academic performance. This is
mainly because positive emotions
help students to be more attentive,
persistent and focused. The ab-
sence of this sense of well-being,
on the other hand, will result in
students feeling socially excluded
because their socio-cultural back-
grounds and identities are not ac-
knowledged. Recent research has
shown that tolerating the use of multi-
lingual skills at school has positive effects
on students’ well-being. This, in turn, im-
proves their academic performance. The
possible explanation for this is that lan-
guage and emotions are closely related.
The more languages one speaks, the
easier it is to express one’s emo-
tions. This means that using stu-
dents’ rich linguistic resources in
classrooms will likely help them develop
positive emotions and well-being.
Furthermore, the well-being of multilin-
gual students is linked with a stronger sense
of belonging to the school environment. This
then helps them build relationships with
their peers and teachers. These positive rela-
tionships create positive interactions relat-
ing to the learning activities. Eventually
, this
helps them improve their academic perfor-
mance and attainment.

A growing body of research has
shownthatagoodrapportbetween
teachers and students contributes
to students’ learning and academ-
ic performance. This is primarily
because a good relationship be-
tween teachers and students is key
to maintaining students’ active
engagementandinterestintheles-
sons being taught. Much research
has shown that multilingual prac-
tices are effective in building and
maintaining such relationships.
For example, a study has found
multilingual practices in the class-
room helped students to have a
good rapport with their teachers
andthusabetterunderstandingof
the materials. Multilingual skills
enable teachers and students to
use many strategies to build mean-
ingful communication and rela-
tionships with each other.For ex-
ample, humorous and playful
talks are rich resources that stu-
dents can use in the classrooms to
build “a safe house” in which
they can freely express their iden-
tities and engage in classroom
activities. Such humour and play-
fulness are learned through mul-
tiple languages they acquired
outside the classroom.

SKILLS HELP BUILD RAPPORT BE-
TWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS,

ING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.

GANDHI FAMILY
ALSO NEEDS ITS
‘BHAKTS’
The decades gone by
in Indian politics
are a testamount as to
how the Gandhi family
and the Congress have
proved to be comple-
mentary to each other,
and on a checkerboard
whenever the hegemo-
ny of the Gandhi fami-
ly has been challenged
from within the Con-
gress, in order to save
their king and queen,
the games that even mi-
nor pawns have played
are plenty. Let go of
Prashant Kishor’s re-
marks about the Gan-
dhi family, let us talk
about the important
meeting of the Con-
gress Working Com-
mittee held in the
recent past. So
here are the
d e v e l o p -
ments as they
h a p p e n e d :
Before this
meeting, Ra-
hul Gandhi
holds an impor-
tant half-an-hour
meeting with
Tariq Hamid
Karra, a
senior leader of his
party who belongs to
Jammu and Kashmir.
Then both the leaders
leave to attend the Con-
gress Working Com-
mittee meeting. As
soon as Congress Work-
ing President Sonia
Gandhi’s passionate
speech in this impor-
tant meeting ends, Kar-
ra suddenly rises up
without any formal
role and starts speak-
ing loudly - ‘For us the
Gandhi family is the
Congress. And Con-
gress is the Gandhi
family and all those
who are present here
and consider Rahul
Gandhi as their leader,
then they all should
raise their hands. Gu-
lab Nabi Azad, who was
present in the meet-
ing, also had to
raise his hands.
It was Ambika
Soni and
Mukul Wasnik
who did not
pretend to sup-
port. After
this, Karra
shouted with
enthu-
siasm - ‘Those who are
traitors should be ex-
pelled from the party.’
Interestingly, the real
character of today’s
politics is formed by
mixing these speech-
less expressions.
WAS SHAHRUKH A
VICTIM OF
POLITICAL
VENDETTA?
Whatever hap-
pened with Ary-
an Khan, son of Bolly-
wood superstar Shah
Rukh Khan, had al-
ready been scripted.
According to reliable
sources, in the month
of August, Shahrukh
received a call from a
top official of the coun-
try who is considered
‘close’ to a certain poli-
tician. It is said that
‘Netaji’ wanted to do
his own mega-show in
Dubai, in which he
needed Shahrukh who
is known to be close to
the Royal family of
Saudi Arabia. However,
since Shah Rukh’s po-
litical commitment is
not a secret, he sought
two days’ time to think
over the proposal and
said that “he will call
and inform.” So when
he did not call back the
said officer even after
two days, then on the
third day again the
same officer’s call came
and this time Shah-
rukh refused bluntly.
The officer asked Shah-
rukh for the last time
in a warning tone, ‘Is
this your final deci-
sion?’ Shahrukh said-
‘Yes, I thought a lot
about it but there is
nothing that I can do
about it.’ Then as in
every Bollywood film,
there occurred a hero-
antagonist confronta-
tion, a battle, struggle
and the stubbornness
to give everything in
this fight, all that hap-
pened is in front of eve-
ryone!
YECHURY ON
TARGET OF HIS
OWN PARTY
The three-day meet-
ing of the Central
Committee of the
Marxist Party was con-
vened in New Delhi,
but in this meeting,
most leaders seemed to
be angry with their
party general secre-
tary Sitaram Yechury.
Yechury was also asked
why his political think-
ing is centered around
Sonia Gandhi’s
aura? One
party leader,
excited with
the develop-
ments, went
to length to ask
his party gen-
eral secretary
that he
should clarify his role
whether it was Amar
Singh’s or Bhagat Sin-
gh’s? While Yechuri
had come thinking he
would lobby for yet an-
other term for himself
as General Secretary,
on the other hand he
was to deal with such
unpleasant questions.
As soon as it came to
his second term, the
voices of collective pro-
test of many commu-
nist leaders started
coming to the fore -
‘The party has pro-
gressed on its own in
Kerala, you have no
contribution in it.
What happened to us in
Bengal is in front of
everyone’. Yechury
tried to pacify
the agitated
workers and
talked about
the outbreak
of Corona
in which he
has lost his
loved ones
while citing the exam-
ple of Cuba. But the
leaders of his party
were in no mood to re-
main silent and started
saying - ‘Leave Russia
and Cuba and talk
about your country.
Why are we on such a
slope?’ Surely Yechury
also has to find answers
to these questions.
WHY IS PRIYANKA
AT ‘LOGGERHEADS’
WITH SIDHU?
Navjot Singh Sidhu,
known for his big
words, was once a ‘blue
eyed boy’ of Congress
General Secretary Pri-
yanka Gandhi. In order
to get Sidhu the com-
mand of Punjab, Pri-
yanka had also made a
ruckus with mother
Sonia and brother Ra-
hul. But what did Pri-
yanka get in return? A
resignation threat from
Sidhu? Priyanka was so
hurt by Sidhu’s resig-
nation letter to Sonia
that it is being said that
she has stopped picking
up Sidhu’s calls these
days. When Harish
Chaudhary of Ra-
jasthan was made in-
charge of Punjab in
place of Harish Rawat,
he was given a clear in-
struction from 10 Jan-
path that ‘no matter
what happens, he
should not go to Sidhu’s
house to meet him.’
Anyway, the newly ap-
pointed Chief Minister
of Punjab Charanjit
Singh Channi has con-
trolled the Congress’
‘downfall’ to a great ex-
tent there. When Sidhu
was eager to go to Lakh-
impur Kheri, it was ex-
plained to him by the
Congress not to sit on
fast, as it would divert
media attention from
Priyanka’, but where
was Sidhu going to fol-
low, he was just taking
politics as his own per-
sonal play field!

an art exhibi-
tion presented
by Bhavna Ka-
kar is being or-
ganised from
October 27 to November
15, at Latitude 28, Lado
Sarai. Phantasmagoria
brings together artists
like Dileep Sharma,
Farhad Husain,
George Martin,
Pratul Dash, who
problematize the
concept of realism
as well as reality, in an
age that is a frenzy of
simulations. Taking
from pop culture while
blurring the bounda-
ries between ‘high’ and
‘low’ art, these artists
form bricolages of
mental landscapes.
‘Parody’ and ‘Pastiche’
are blended to form a
post-modern critique
of consumerist aesthet-
ics. Dileep Sharma jux-
taposes motifs that are
reflective of contempo-
rary media and popular
culture to embed his
images with a stark
sense of satirical humor,
seduction, and fantasy
.
His models reflect fash-
ion and flamboyance to
subvert their very es-
sence through contrast-
ing imagery
. Farhad Hu-
sainexploresthepolitics
and dynamics of human
relationships affected by
the capitalist society
which survives through
alienationandsheercon-
sumption. He creates
eclectic rhetoric of im-
ages coming from di-
verse schools, prints,
and images from the
entertainment world
creating a montage
of old and new.
George Martin cre-
ates ideas or abstract
thoughts into an almost
tangible physical thing
by providing them with
a conceptual aesthetic.
The flow of thought al-
ludes to the fluidity of
music and sound and a
pastiche of sorts is
manifested by bringing
in images from distinct
sources revealing the
fragmentary nature of
contemporary times.
Pratul Dash employs
the painted surface to
distort the perception
of the viewer and there-
by question their view
of representation.

DELENG/2021/19840 l Vol 1 l Issue No. 63 Aditi Nagar t was in a dusty vil- lage of Gujarat called Nadiad, that a child was born on October 31, 1875. Hailing from a simple family, the child showed an inclination to study and do well and at a time when handful of Indians actually went for ‘modern educa- tion’, this child learned and be- came a barrister. However, little did his family, friends and col- leagues know, this individual, in years to come, would have per- haps the most profound impact on India and its political unity, for this was no other than the Iron Man - Vallabhbhai Jhaverb- hai Patel. Often called Sardar, meaning “chief” in Hindi, Urdu, and Persian, Patel acted as Home Minister during the political in- tegration of India and the Indo- Pakistani War of 1947. It is to his untiring efforts and tenacity that the India of today exists as he did the unimaginable work of get- ting over five hundred royal states accede to India. His com- mitment to national integration in the newly independent coun- try was total and uncompromis- ing, earning him the sobriquet “Iron Man of India”. He is also remembered as the “patron saint of India’s civil servants” for hav- ing established the modern All India Services system. It was therefore befitting that ‘The Stat- ue of Unity’, the world’s tallest statue being approximately 182 metres (597 ft) in height, was dedicated to him on 31 October 2018 by Prime Minister Naren- dra Modi, as an ode to the one man whose will carved and en- tire nation! First India remem- bers the Iron man on his birth anniversary! Incidentally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is often called the ‘modern Iron Man’, is in Guja- rat today . Under Modi Ji’s leadership India is marching ahead on the path of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’. Smriti Z Irani @smritiirani My gratitude to @nsgblackcats for commemorating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav by visiting historical landmarks of freedom struggle and paying homage to freedom fighters martyrs through Sudarshan Bharat Parikrama. TOP TWEETS MODI MEETS POPE AS CHRISTIANS IN INDIA COMPLAIN OF PERSECUTION nternational Catholic newsweekly ,TheTab- let, carried a report in July stating that ChristianandMuslim minoritieswerebeingpersecuted in India. Quoting a report, The Tablet said, “Daily life for many Christian and Muslim communi- ties in urban and rural India has become an excruciating struggle to earn a living and practise their faith while also remaining alive and under the radar of far-right Hindutva organizations…” A re- portintheVaticanNewssaidthat “persecution against Christians inIndiarosebyover40percentin the first half of 2020, despite na- tionwide lockdown”. Hindu vigilante groups attack Christians alleging conversions and it is doubtful if the issue would have come up between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pope Francis when the for- mer met the head of Roman Catholics at the Vatican. The prime minister has invited the Pope to visit India, a welcome gesture. Though before the Pope comes calling, a few of the viru- lent Hindu vigilante groups have to be reined in. I amata Banerjee has reached Goa where, in a kind of Gandhigiri, she said she did ‘namaste’ with folded hands to those who welcomed her with black flags on arrival in Panaji. That was a different approach from the “Khela hobe” gauntlet she threw in front of Prime Minister Nar- endra Modi in West Bengal where a Jai Shri Ram slogan at a non-political event drew the battle-lines between Tri- namool Congress and the BJP. Besides black flags, Mamata was welcomed by Jai Shri Ram posters along- side TMC posters claiming “Goa’s New Dawn” (Goenchi Navi Sakal). Despite being made to bite the dust by Kol- kata’s street-fighter in West Bengal, BJP’s Amit Malviya tweeted, “Mamata Banerjee’s reputation of being anti-Hin- du in Bengal has tailed her to Goa, where she is being wel- comed with giant size posters of Jai Shri Ram.” Mamata remained unruffled as she mingled with fishermen in a crowded fish market. To un- derstand the political signifi- cance of her move one has to go back a few months back, in July this year, when Mamata met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi sparking rumours of Opposition unity. Her Goa visit has virtually dashed all hopes of Opposition unity as she readies the TMC to take on not only the BJP but also the Congress, Sharad Pa- war’s Nationalist Congress Party , Shiv Sena and the Aam Aadmi Party, besides eight regional parties. Although it is unclear at this stage if the TMC will ally with the NCP and any of the regional par- ties, Congress won’t be in her scheme of things as she bids for a pan-India presence. MAMATA GOES TO GOA, DOES GANDHIGIRI Despite being made to bite the dust by Kolkata’s street- fighter in West Bengal, BJP’s Amit Malviya tweeted, “Mamata Banerjee’s reputation of being anti- Hindu in Bengal has tailed her to Goa, where she is being welcomed with giant size posters of Jai Shri Ram.” Mamata remained unruffled as she mingled with fishermen in a crowded fish market M he Indian Foreign Service has produced a number of authors. The most prominent among them is Pavan K Var- ma. He joined the IFS in 1976. Retired 2012. His father was an ICS officer. His first book, “Ghalib- The Man. The Times” was published in 1989. I reviewed his “Krishna. The Playful Di- vine” and “The Great Indian Middle Class”. Each one of his dozen books has sold well. His writings have an elegant style, He avoids panache. I hold the view that authorship is a sacred calling. No room for sultry flippancy in his writings. To put it briefly , Pa- van Varma is an author of high literary voltage. I have recently read his lat- est book, “The Great Hindu Civilization: Achievement, Neglect, Bias And The Way Forward”, it is the work of an accomplished scholar. Read- ing it at times I felt like an ignoramus. Ilearntmuchfromthebook, unusual for a man in his 93rd year.Onecouldsayof Pavan’s, “The Great Hindu Civiliza- tion” “Har sans main kahani hai. Har sans me afsana hai” The six chapters are head- ed. 1. Hindu Civilization: Myth or Reality? 2. The Au- dacity of thought (this re- minded me of the title of Ba- rack Obama’s book, “An Au- dacity of Hope”. 3. The Realm of Ideas. 4. The Islamic con- quest. 5. British rule And Its Aftermath. 6. The Challenge of the Modern Republic. Pavan is critical of Amar- tya Sen’s views on many as- pects of Hinduism. He is only a little less severe on Sunil Khilnani and Romila Thapar. Here I shall address my- self to chapter four and five. How did we become enslaved for nearly a thousand years, after the spiritual achieve- ments of the earlier two mil- lenniums. “The conquest of India by foreigners starting with the seventeen invasions of Mah- mud Ghazni and the subse- quent establishment of the Ghurid empire in Delhi un- der Mohammad Ghori in 1202, left India physically de- stroyed and psychologically traumatized. Hindu civiliza- tion had never seen conquer- ors like the Islamic Turkic invaders, who were so blindly committed to the destruction of a culture, so fanatically driven by a belief in the supe- riority of their religion, so unrelenting in their hatred for to it and so passionate about the need to convert the unbelievers… The invaders believed that they were the chosen ones, the believers, and that those who were not were Kafirs, unbelievers, be- yond the pale. The territory of the Kafir was dubbed Dar- al-Harb, a place to make it Dar-al-Islam, the land of Is- lam.,” writes Pavan. Amartya Sen has written in one of his books that, “the slash and burn culture of the Muslim invaders….devas- tated several cities and ru- ined many temples, includ- ing particularly ones in Ma- thura,KanaujandSomnath”. According to Maulana Minhaj-us-Siraj Mahmud took away the idol from Som- nath and had it broken in four parts, one of these was interred at the entrance of the main mosque in Ghazni and another at the gateways of the Sultan’s palace. The author concede that, “Hindu and Muslim cultures enriched each other in music, poetry, architecture, paint- ing, food, social behavior, cus- toms and even religious prac- tices. This is the foundation of the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb we speak today, which also makes India unique.” Pavan K Varma deals with Sufism deftly and brilliantly with the poets and saints in different parts of India that kept Hinduism alive. Shivaji and Guru Gobind Singh are given their due for not only challenging the Islamic rul- ersbutweakeningtheMughal Empire. Tulsidas and Kabir get pride of place, as does Jay- adeva for his erotic Gita Gob- ind, and Mirabai of course. The opening sentence of the chapter on British rule is, “The establishment of Brit- ish rule in India deeply im- pactedHinducivilization and India as a whole, not only for the physical subjugation of itspeopleandthehumiliation it entailed, but for the coloni- zationof theminditachieved. While this is the goal of all colonizingpowers, theBritish were far more successful practitioners of this policy .” Pavan rightly takes Babington Macaulay to task, who knew nothing about In- dia’s culture, the spiritual dimensions or its past. His deeply offensive, “Minute on Education”…”In one rhetori- cal flourish, rubbished the entire civilization heritage of all Indians.” Pavan Varma’s delineation of the characters Raja Ram Mohan Roy came as a sur- prise. This is a book of very high scholarship and im- mensely educative. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL VARMA:MOSTNOTABLE AUTHOR OF ALL TIMES T The author concede that, “Hindu and Muslim cultures enriched each other in music, poetry, architecture, painting, food, social behavior, customs and even religious practices. This is the foundation of the Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb we speak today, which also makes India unique.” I have recently read his latest book, “The Great Hindu Civilization: Achievement, Neglect, Bias And The Way Forward”, it is the work of an accomplished scholar. Kohli spoke about backing Shami “200 per cent”. “There’s a good rea- son why we are playing onthefieldandnotsome bunch of spineless peo- ple on social media that have no courage to actu- ally speak to any indi- vidual in person. They hide behind their identi- ties and go after people through social media, making fun of people and that has become a social entertainment in today’s world, which is so unfortunate and so sad to see,” Kohli said at the pre-match press con- ference, with India play- ing against New Zea- land. “This is literally the lowest level of hu- man potential that one can operate at and that’s how I look at these peo- ple,” he added. AfterIndia’s10-wicket loss to Pakistan, Shami became the target-in- chief for some people on social media, based on his religion. His captain stood by him, while call- ing the abuse pathetic. “People take out their frustrations because they obviously have no understanding of what we do as individuals. They have no under- standing of how much effortweputonthefield. They have no under- standing of the fact that someone like Moham- mad Shami has won In- diaanumberof matches in the last few years and he’s been our primary bowler with Jasprit Bumrah, when it comes to making an impact,” Kohli said. Speaking about the Congress, she said, “I cannot say everything right now because they didn’t take politics seri- ously. Modiji is going to be more powerful be- cause of the Congress... If one cannot take a decision, why should the country suffer for that?” “They (Congress) got an opportunity (in the past). Instead of fight- ing against BJP, they contested against me in my state. Don’t you think when they con- tested against me, when they contest my political party in Ben- gal...,” she said. Aryan comes home 4 weeks after arrest in drugs-on-cruise case Mumbai: Aryan Khan, the son of Shah Rukh Khan, on Saturday left a Mumbai jail after near- ly four weeks. The 23-year-old was granted bail on Thursday by the Bombay High Court in the drugs-on-cruise case but spent two ad- ditional nights in jail as his bail papers missed the 5:30 pm deadline on Friday after an anxious wait that went down to seconds. Around 11 am, surrounded by security men, the star’s son got into a waiting white Range Rover and was driven away, ending days of speculation be- hind his release. Arthur Road jail offi- cials were seen taking out the bail papers from the “bail box” in the early hours of the morning, setting off the process for the star son’s release. Sisodia inaugurated an incubation centre at the Ambedkar Universi- ty and said it will “act as a foundation for our fu- ture entrepreneurs”. “This incubation cen- tre being started in the Ambedkar University will become the founda- tion for new companies to be developed by our students and will give job opportunities across the world. He said there are two types of universities in the world, first universi- ties are those where the students stand in line to get employed after grad- uating. On the other hand, there are universities where there is competi- tion among the compa- nies giving jobs and it is the companies that get in a line to employ the stu- dents of these universi- ties, he said. “It is the children of these univer- sities who are later creat- ing companies like Face- book, Google and giving jobs to people all over the world. In such a situa- tion, the castes that play a decisive role in elections are bound to come in the limelight. One such popular com- munity is ‘Rajbhar’. According to the re- port of the Social Jus- tice Committee, Rajb- har community is around 3 percent of the total population of UP. But in more than a hundred seats from Purvanchal to Awadh, their population is sig- nificantly in a decisive position in electoral terms. In the present sce- nario, Om Prakash Ra- jbhar is, seemingly, a very effective leader of the Rajbhars. He start- ed a campaign to mobi- lize this caste by form- ing the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) in the year 2002. Although he could get electoral success only after an alliance with the BJP in the 2017 as- sembly elections, the party could get four seats. At the same time, BJP also got electoral benefit from this alli- ance. After Om Prakash Rajbhar broke the alli- ance, BJP made every effort to maintain its strong foothold among Rajbhar voters. Anil Rajbhar was given the rank of cabinet minis- ter. At the same time, Sakaldeep Rajbhar of Ballia was made Rajya Sabha MP. BSP also realising the importance of this caste appointed Bhim Rajbhar as the state president of the party. It is obvious that all the parties are eager to woo the Rajbhar vot- ers. At the time of elec- tions, on whom will this community repose trust, this picture is not clear yet. But as far as the mes- sage is concerned, by forging an alliance with Omprakash Rajb- har, the SP has definite- ly gained an edge over the rest of the parties. • 8. ultilingual skills that allow people to switch from one lan- guage to another or mix languages are often considered more as a problem rather than an asset.Much research has documented the use of similar pejorative terms elsewhere. This includes bahasa rojak (salad language) in Malaysia, amulumala (verbal salad) in Nigeria, and tuti futi (broken- up) in the Panjabi-speaking community in India. There are also more neutral-sounding terms like Singlish (Singa- pore), Japlish (Japan), Franglais (France/Canada), Taglish (the Philippines) and Hinglish (India) to label those who mix multiple languages. Some argue that such multi- lingual practices reflect one’s inability to think in a struc- tured and systematic way. For- mal education systems share a similar view, looking at them as a hindrance to students’ aca- demic success as they are be- lieved to delay the process of learning school subjects. How- ever, many studies have proven otherwise. Contrary to popular opin- ion, this research shows mul- tilingual practices do not have any adverse effect on students’ academic achievement. Adopt- ing a multilingual approach in classrooms has proven to be important in increasing stu- dents’ academic performance and even closing the achieve- ment gap between students living in cities and those in villages. It has also been re- ported that multilingual stu- dents’ academic progress, par- ticularly in reading and maths, are two to three times greater than that of their monolingual counterparts. There are at least three main reasons why multilingual skills give students an academ- ic edge. FIRST, MULTILINGUAL SKILLS HELP STUDENTS TO ACTI- VATE THEIR PRIOR KNOWLEDGE, WHICH POSITIVELY AFFECTS THE PROCESS OF UN- DERSTANDING NEW KNOWLEDGE. Prior knowledge here refers to the knowledge and ex- periences that stu- dents have previous- ly acquired at schools and home. Much research has shown that this pre-ex- isting knowledge greatly benefits them in understand- ing new knowledge. This is evi- denced by a growing number of educational researchers and practitioners grappling with bridging the gap between home and school contexts. Prior knowledge plays a critical role in increasing academic achieve- ment mainly because it can har- ness students’ curiosity , increase their attention, and help them to interpret, evaluate and encode new information. In other words, failing to activate this prior knowledge will likely result in the students being demotivated and less engaged in the lessons. Prior knowledge is encoded in the to- tality of the students’ linguis- tic repertoire, which consists of words, phrases and sentences from their first, second, third languages, and so on. To put it simply, to activate students’ pri- or knowledge optimally , teachers must tap into the students’ full linguistic repertoire. Imposing the rule of only using one lan- guage in the classroom will only activate the knowledge embed- ded in that one specific language, if at all. This will make it a bit harder for students to process and understand new knowledge. THIRD, MULTILINGUAL SKILLS HELP IN- CREASE STUDENTS’ WELL-BEING, WHICH IS A KEY FACTOR IN SUC- CESSFUL LEARNING. Well-being plays an important role in academic performance. This is mainly because positive emotions help students to be more attentive, persistent and focused. The ab- sence of this sense of well-being, on the other hand, will result in students feeling socially excluded because their socio-cultural back- grounds and identities are not ac- knowledged. Recent research has shown that tolerating the use of multi- lingual skills at school has positive effects on students’ well-being. This, in turn, im- proves their academic performance. The possible explanation for this is that lan- guage and emotions are closely related. The more languages one speaks, the easier it is to express one’s emo- tions. This means that using stu- dents’ rich linguistic resources in classrooms will likely help them develop positive emotions and well-being. Furthermore, the well-being of multilin- gual students is linked with a stronger sense of belonging to the school environment. This then helps them build relationships with their peers and teachers. These positive rela- tionships create positive interactions relat- ing to the learning activities. Eventually , this helps them improve their academic perfor- mance and attainment. M WHYMIXING LANGUAGES CANIMPROVE PERFORMANCE STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC TALKING POINT NEW DELHI | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2021 07 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia A growing body of research has shownthatagoodrapportbetween teachers and students contributes to students’ learning and academ- ic performance. This is primarily because a good relationship be- tween teachers and students is key to maintaining students’ active engagementandinterestintheles- sons being taught. Much research has shown that multilingual prac- tices are effective in building and maintaining such relationships. For example, a study has found multilingual practices in the class- room helped students to have a good rapport with their teachers andthusabetterunderstandingof the materials. Multilingual skills enable teachers and students to use many strategies to build mean- ingful communication and rela- tionships with each other. For ex- ample, humorous and playful talks are rich resources that stu- dents can use in the classrooms to build “a safe house” in which they can freely express their iden- tities and engage in classroom activities. Such humour and play- fulness are learned through mul- tiple languages they acquired outside the classroom. SECOND, MULTILINGUAL SKILLS HELP BUILD RAPPORT BE- TWEEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, WHICH IS IMPORTANT FOR IMPROV- ING ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.

Whereas, in the BJP re- gime, not only has infra- structure been devel- oped, industries have also been set up in tribal belts and that has grant- ed jobs to locals. Anurag Thakur, Union IB Minister Swallow harsh words that will hurt others- you will save yourself and others from discomfort. —Jagdeesh Chandra, CEO Editor, First India GANDHI FAMILY ALSO NEEDS ITS ‘BHAKTS’ The decades gone by in Indian politics are a testamount as to how the Gandhi family and the Congress have proved to be comple- mentary to each other, and on a checkerboard whenever the hegemo- ny of the Gandhi fami- ly has been challenged from within the Con- gress, in order to save their king and queen, the games that even mi- nor pawns have played are plenty. Let go of Prashant Kishor’s re- marks about the Gan- dhi family, let us talk about the important meeting of the Con- gress Working Com- mittee held in the recent past. So here are the d e v e l o p - ments as they h a p p e n e d : Before this meeting, Ra- hul Gandhi holds an impor- tant half-an-hour meeting with Tariq Hamid Karra, a senior leader of his party who belongs to Jammu and Kashmir. Then both the leaders leave to attend the Con- gress Working Com- mittee meeting. As soon as Congress Work- ing President Sonia Gandhi’s passionate speech in this impor- tant meeting ends, Kar- ra suddenly rises up without any formal role and starts speak- ing loudly - ‘For us the Gandhi family is the Congress. And Con- gress is the Gandhi family and all those who are present here and consider Rahul Gandhi as their leader, then they all should raise their hands. Gu- lab Nabi Azad, who was present in the meet- ing, also had to raise his hands. It was Ambika Soni and Mukul Wasnik who did not pretend to sup- port. After this, Karra shouted with enthu- siasm - ‘Those who are traitors should be ex- pelled from the party.’ Interestingly, the real character of today’s politics is formed by mixing these speech- less expressions. WAS SHAHRUKH A VICTIM OF POLITICAL VENDETTA? Whatever hap- pened with Ary- an Khan, son of Bolly- wood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, had al- ready been scripted. According to reliable sources, in the month of August, Shahrukh received a call from a top official of the coun- try who is considered ‘close’ to a certain poli- tician. It is said that ‘Netaji’ wanted to do his own mega-show in Dubai, in which he needed Shahrukh who is known to be close to the Royal family of Saudi Arabia. However, since Shah Rukh’s po- litical commitment is not a secret, he sought two days’ time to think over the proposal and said that “he will call and inform.” So when he did not call back the said officer even after two days, then on the third day again the same officer’s call came and this time Shah- rukh refused bluntly. The officer asked Shah- rukh for the last time in a warning tone, ‘Is this your final deci- sion?’ Shahrukh said- ‘Yes, I thought a lot about it but there is nothing that I can do about it.’ Then as in every Bollywood film, there occurred a hero- antagonist confronta- tion, a battle, struggle and the stubbornness to give everything in this fight, all that hap- pened is in front of eve- ryone! YECHURY ON TARGET OF HIS OWN PARTY The three-day meet- ing of the Central Committee of the Marxist Party was con- vened in New Delhi, but in this meeting, most leaders seemed to be angry with their party general secre- tary Sitaram Yechury. Yechury was also asked why his political think- ing is centered around Sonia Gandhi’s aura? One party leader, excited with the develop- ments, went to length to ask his party gen- eral secretary that he should clarify his role whether it was Amar Singh’s or Bhagat Sin- gh’s? While Yechuri had come thinking he would lobby for yet an- other term for himself as General Secretary, on the other hand he was to deal with such unpleasant questions. As soon as it came to his second term, the voices of collective pro- test of many commu- nist leaders started coming to the fore - ‘The party has pro- gressed on its own in Kerala, you have no contribution in it. What happened to us in Bengal is in front of everyone’. Yechury tried to pacify the agitated workers and talked about the outbreak of Corona in which he has lost his loved ones while citing the exam- ple of Cuba. But the leaders of his party were in no mood to re- main silent and started saying - ‘Leave Russia and Cuba and talk about your country. Why are we on such a slope?’ Surely Yechury also has to find answers to these questions. WHY IS PRIYANKA AT ‘LOGGERHEADS’ WITH SIDHU? Navjot Singh Sidhu, known for his big words, was once a ‘blue eyed boy’ of Congress General Secretary Pri- yanka Gandhi. In order to get Sidhu the com- mand of Punjab, Pri- yanka had also made a ruckus with mother Sonia and brother Ra- hul. But what did Pri- yanka get in return? A resignation threat from Sidhu? Priyanka was so hurt by Sidhu’s resig- nation letter to Sonia that it is being said that she has stopped picking up Sidhu’s calls these days. When Harish Chaudhary of Ra- jasthan was made in- charge of Punjab in place of Harish Rawat, he was given a clear in- struction from 10 Jan- path that ‘no matter what happens, he should not go to Sidhu’s house to meet him.’ Anyway, the newly ap- pointed Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi has con- trolled the Congress’ ‘downfall’ to a great ex- tent there. When Sidhu was eager to go to Lakh- impur Kheri, it was ex- plained to him by the Congress not to sit on fast, as it would divert media attention from Priyanka’, but where was Sidhu going to fol- low, he was just taking politics as his own per- sonal play field! The Award ceremony will be held in November in the presence of Union Cabinet Ministers and some dignitaries. According to the official Twitter handle from DCP North East Delhi, Rakesh Asthana, Commissioner of Police, Delhi felicitated Praharis, YUVA stakeholders, and Tejaswini women personnel at Suraksha Se Vikaas- empowering the Stakeholders program organised by North West District, Delhi Police. hantasmagoria, an art exhibi- tion presented by Bhavna Ka- kar is being or- ganised from October 27 to November 15, at Latitude 28, Lado Sarai. Phantasmagoria brings together artists like Dileep Sharma, Farhad Husain, George Martin, Pratul Dash, who problematize the concept of realism as well as reality, in an age that is a frenzy of simulations. Taking from pop culture while blurring the bounda- ries between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art, these artists form bricolages of mental landscapes. ‘Parody’ and ‘Pastiche’ are blended to form a post-modern critique of consumerist aesthet- ics. Dileep Sharma jux- taposes motifs that are reflective of contempo- rary media and popular culture to embed his images with a stark sense of satirical humor, seduction, and fantasy . His models reflect fash- ion and flamboyance to subvert their very es- sence through contrast- ing imagery . Farhad Hu- sainexploresthepolitics and dynamics of human relationships affected by the capitalist society which survives through alienationandsheercon- sumption. He creates eclectic rhetoric of im- ages coming from di- verse schools, prints, and images from the entertainment world creating a montage of old and new. George Martin cre- ates ideas or abstract thoughts into an almost tangible physical thing by providing them with a conceptual aesthetic. The flow of thought al- ludes to the fluidity of music and sound and a pastiche of sorts is manifested by bringing in images from distinct sources revealing the fragmentary nature of contemporary times. Pratul Dash employs the painted surface to distort the perception of the viewer and there- by question their view of representation.
