John Wood founded Room to Read in 2000 after leaving his job at Microsoft to establish school libraries and build schools to provide educational access to children. Room to Read achieves this goal by establishing school libraries, publishing local-language children's books, training teachers, and building schools. John donated 3,000 books to start the organization and recognized the need to expand its work to support girls' education in developing regions facing cultural biases against female education.
