Learning Moving Cast Shadows for Foreground Detection (VS 2008)Jia-Bin Huang
This document summarizes a research paper that presents a new algorithm for detecting foreground objects and moving shadows in surveillance videos. The algorithm uses Gaussian mixture models to learn pixel-based models of cast shadows on background surfaces over time. However, learning pixel-based models can be slow if motion is infrequent. To address this, the algorithm also builds a global shadow model that uses global-level information to help update the local shadow models more quickly. Foreground objects are modeled using nonparametric density estimation of spatial and color information. Finally, background, shadow, and foreground models are combined in a Markov random field energy function that can be efficiently optimized using graph cuts to perform foreground-shadow segmentation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed

The document provides guidance on how to read and study the Bible effectively. It recommends praying before reading to ask God for understanding, setting aside regular time for Bible study to develop a habit, and meditating on what is read to understand how the passage applies personally. Key tips include paying attention to context, cross-references, and whether a passage should be taken literally or figuratively. The overall goal of Bible study is to strengthen faith in Jesus Christ.
The document discusses the Spanish-American War through various images and artifacts, including a monument honoring veterans of the war, a map showing battle locations in the West Indies, newspaper front pages from 1898 announcing the U.S. entry into the war and celebrating its 100th anniversary, a drawing showing the U.S. emerging as a great power after the war, a photo of General George Dewey who captured Manila Bay from Spain, and images of leaders and generals who contributed to U.S. victories in the war.
This document provides a summary of key Christian concepts related to works and salvation. It discusses several Bible passages and argues that salvation is by God's grace through faith alone, not by works. The key points are:
1) Salvation is 100% dependent on God's grace and 0% on our good works. We are not justified by observing the law but by faith alone.
2) Good works do not earn salvation, which is a free gift from God. If we pursue salvation through works, we lose God's gift.
3) When we come to faith, the Holy Spirit changes our attitude so that we now hate sin and are eager to do God's will.
4) As Christians
The document describes the United Way's Youth United Way program, which aims to develop leadership skills in local youth and involve them in community change efforts. As part of the program, juniors and seniors in high school can volunteer and serve as leaders, participating in meetings, fundraisers, and other initiatives. The deadline to apply for the 2010-2011 school year is May 7, 2010. God wants me to examine myself to see if I believe that Jesus' body and blood are truly present in the bread and wine of communion. Some times we can examine ourselves before communion include:
- During private prayer and devotion before coming to church
- During the confession and absolution part of the service
- While singing hymns about communion during the distribution
- As I'm waiting in line to receive communion
Taking these opportunities to reflect on my faith in Christ's real presence and forgiveness can help me properly receive his gifts.

Digital natives: freedom and hackability in a mobile futureTristan Nitot
I'm an old digital native. I've learned to tinker with computers that encourage "hacking" like the Apple II. It shipped with a disassembler, electronic schematics, 8 expansion slots. You did not need a screwdriver to open the lid.
Compare this with today's smartphones, with a centralized AppStore on which one company has total control. This discourages tinkering.
How will the next generation of digital natives learn to tinker if all they have is closed ecosystems?
Mozilla is working on this with the Open Web through two separate initiatives:
* Webmaker.org is a set of tools and events to encourage ordinary people to have a look under the hood of technology.
* Firefox OS aims to ship HTML5-powered smartphones that can run Web applications like other smartphones run native apps.

Introduction to 24symbols (November 2012)24Symbols
24symbols is a digital book subscription service available on the web and mobile apps. It uses a freemium business model where basic services are free with ads and premium subscriptions remove ads. Revenue comes from ads and subscriptions, with 70% of subscription revenue shared among publishers based on pages read of their books by users. The service has grown rapidly since launching in 2011 and has over 85,000 registered users and partnerships with over 85 publishers.
Justo Hidalgo presented a new approach called "Book as a Service" that treats books as an ongoing service rather than a single product. This approach provides a central hub for readers, publishers and authors, including social recommendations, author/publisher pages, and search engine optimization. It also introduces a freemium model where readers can access some content for free with ads or subscribe for ad-free premium access. Revenue is shared with publishers based on the number of pages read from their books. This new model aims to better connect all parties and support the reading experience.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-und-domino-lizenzkostenreduzierung-in-der-welt-von-dlau/
