The United Front was formed in 1953 as a coalition of opposition parties in East Bengal to contest the 1954 provincial elections. It was composed of the Awami Muslim League, Krishak-Shramik Party, East Pakistan Communist Party, and others. They announced a 21-point manifesto demanding greater autonomy and making Bengali a state language. In the 1954 elections, the United Front won 223 out of 309 seats, defeating the ruling Muslim League, but the government was dissolved after just 56 days in power.
