Integrating Video in Mobile Apps and Websites - MBL308 - re:Invent 2017Amazon Web Services
In this session, we will build a highly scalable mobile app, website, and serverless mobile backend architecture that demonstrates on-demand video streaming, adaptive multi-bitrate transcoding, and video content ingestion. We use AWS Lambda and Amazon Elastic Transcoder to automatically convert high resolution videos upon upload, Amazon CloudFront to stream video content to devices using network-aware adaptive multi-bitrate protocols (such as HLS), Amazon Cognito to authenticate users, and AWS Mobile Hub and AWS CloudFormation to automate setting up the required resources.

Build both live and VOD video workflows using the new suite of AWS Elemental media services. In this workshop, you will learn about our new media services and then build live and VOD workflows using these newly introduced services which include AWS Elemental MediaLive, MediaPackage, MediaConvert, MediaStore, and MediaTailor.
Customize a "VOD on AWS" Transcoding Solution with QC, DRM, and More (CTD412)...Amazon Web Services
Building a flexible video processing workflow for file-based media is challenging. In this workshop, learn how to deploy and customize the Video on Demand on an AWS solution and expand it to include QC, DRM, and other advanced capabilities. This well-architected solution automatically provisions services including AWS Elemental MediaConvert, Amazon CloudFront, AWS Step Functions, AWS Lambda, and Amazon S3 to build a scalable, distributed, and global video-on-demand workflow on AWS. Because this solution leverages AWS Step Functions, the workflow is broken into individual steps, making it easier to customize or extend the architecture for specific video-on-demand needs
We introduce AWS Transit Gateway and its functionalities, such as routing domains, attachments, and propagation. We offer a hands-on lab for developing an architecture that provides isolation between environments like production and dev environment. Further, we design an Outbound Amazon VPC for centralized internet access for outbound URL filtering, or data loss prevention scenarios. We conclude by demonstrating the integration of AWS Direct Connect gateway with AWS Transit Gateway.
In this session we explore how to build scalable VOD, and high-capacity 4K live streaming workflows on AWS. This session includes a look at the world’s first live 4K UHD stream from space in collaboration with NASA.
The Netflix encoding team is responsible for transcoding different types of media sources to a large number of media formats to support all Netflix devices. Transcoding these media sources has compute needs ranging from running compute-intensive video encodes to low-latency, high-volume image and text processing. The encoding service may require hundreds of thousands of compute hours to be distributed at moment's notice where they are needed most. In this session, we explore the various strategies employed by the encoding service to automate management of a heterogenous collection of Amazon EC2 Reserved Instances, resolve compute contention, and distribute them based on priority and workload.

How to deploy a production ready serverless application
Level: 300
To get the most out of the agility afforded by serverless, it is essential to build CI/CD pipelines that help teams iterate on code and quickly release features.
Serverless and distributed systems in production cannot be done any other way than with a good and efficient CI/CD pipeline.
In this talk, I demonstrate how you can use infrastructure-as-code (IaC) models to build effective CI/CD release workflows to manage serverless deployments on AWS, using tools like AWS CodeBuild, AWS CodePipeline, and AWS CodeDeploy.
Specifically, we focus on how to automate safer deployments that can be monitored and rolled back automatically.
I will do demos where I deploy Lambdas with Code* suite and show examples with complex systems.
In this session, learn how you evaluate, design, build, and manage distributed applications over hybrid infrastructures using Amazon Web Services. This session follows the evolution of a simple legacy data center expansion with
basic connectivity into managing complex hybrid applications. Along the way, we investigate best practice designs in use by AWS customers. Topics covered include: interconnectivity, availability, security, hybrid networks with Amazon VPC and AWS Direct Connect as well as automated provisioning with AWS CloudFormation, and configuration management with AWS OpsWorks.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
