After a rebellion damaged parts of the city, Emperor Justinian embarked on major reconstruction projects, including building the iconic Hagia Sophia cathedral. Religion and government were closely intertwined in the Byzantine Empire. Tensions grew between the Eastern Orthodox Church and Western Catholic Church, culminating in their formal split in 1054.
Why did Europeans explore the World?
Europeans in the 15th century knew little about areas beyond Europe. The Atlantic Ocean was seen as too vast to cross and Africa was believed to be too large to sail around. Improvements in shipbuilding technology and navigation instruments eventually enabled explorers like Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama to explore the coast of Africa, hoping to find a trade route to India and spread Christianity. This led to Europe's age of discovery and greater geographical knowledge of the world.

Alfred Wegener first proposed the theory of continental drift in 1915, hypothesizing that 200 million years ago the continents were joined together in a supercontinent called Pangaea. Pangaea began breaking apart in the late Triassic period, forming the continents of Gondwanaland and Laurasia separated by the Tethys Sea. By the end of the Cretaceous period the continents had separated into their modern positions. Wegener published his theory of continental drift and the existence of Pangaea in his 1915 book.
Discovery: Columbus
Christopher Columbus, a Genoese explorer and navigator, obtained support for his plan to reach Asia by sailing west from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain in 1492. He set sail with three ships and 88 men, landing in the Bahamas rather than Asia. European Middle Ages
During the European Middle Ages from 500-1500 CE:
- Feudalism emerged as centralized governments broke down and lords provided protection in exchange for labor and taxes. This dominated the political and economic system.
- The Catholic Church grew to be the most stable institution, standardizing Christianity, while tensions arose between kings and popes over political power.
- By the High Middle Ages 1000-1300 CE, stronger economies and increased agricultural production supported a revival of towns and rise of strong monarchies like France and England with the beginnings of parliamentary systems. Intellectual and cultural developments accelerated.

Alfred Wegener first proposed the theory of continental drift in 1915, hypothesizing that 200 million years ago the continents were joined together in a supercontinent called Pangaea. Pangaea began breaking apart in the late Triassic period, forming the continents of Gondwanaland and Laurasia separated by the Tethys Sea. By the end of the Cretaceous period the continents had separated into their modern positions. Wegener published his theory of continental drift and the existence of Pangaea in his 1915 book.
Discovery: Columbus
Christopher Columbus, a Genoese explorer and navigator, obtained support for his plan to reach Asia by sailing west from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain in 1492. He set sail with three ships and 88 men, landing in the Bahamas rather than Asia. After exploring the islands and encountering the native Taíno people, Columbus returned to Spain with prisoners and goods. His voyage inaugurated a period of European colonization in the Americas over the next centuries.
European Middle Ages
During the European Middle Ages from 500-1500 CE:
- Feudalism emerged as centralized governments broke down and lords provided protection in exchange for labor and taxes. This dominated the political and economic system.
- The Catholic Church grew to be the most stable institution, standardizing Christianity, while tensions arose between kings and popes over political power.
- By the High Middle Ages 1000-1300 CE, stronger economies and increased agricultural production supported a revival of towns and rise of strong monarchies like France and England with the beginnings of parliamentary systems. Intellectual and cultural developments accelerated.
