Nebraska Department of Transportation About NDOT The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is responsible for the planning, development, design, construction, maintenance and administration of the state highway system. The goals of the Department are to preserve the billions of dollars Nebraskans have invested in their state highway system, making the highways safe and efficient, and accomplishing this in a timely and cost-effective manner. - Talk about mission (why) and goals (how) then address how I worked in highway safety office, traffic division and how my work pertained mainly to safety projects. Worked in the highway safety office of the traffic engineering division at NDOT Safety is a key part of the mission of NDOT and the first of the 8 strategic goals
- Worked on many projects during my time at NDOT Selected a few to talk about
- Talk about what the work entailed and how the information and data was gathered. Goals Establish a list of all roundabouts in the state Build a KMZ file that shows the locations of all roundabouts in the state Gather sufficient data to study the safety effects of roundabouts compared to a comparable intersection Future Impact Research and calculations will be used to assist in determining where new roundabouts will be located to increase safety while using funding economically Work Recieved a few lists of roundabouts Plotted the roundabouts in google earth and created a KMZ Used the KMZ to view each roundabout and collect geometric data along with speed limit Collected crash data from NDOT’s database Corresponded with district engineers and metropolitan planning agencies to gather locations and plans for new and planned roundabouts Compiled a comprehensive spreadsheet with all data and created figures to show crash rates, roundabout sizes vs speed limits, etc.

Goals Determine what data is required to calculate and calibrate each CMF and SPF Determine which data NDOT has already collected or is currently collecting and which data has not yet been collected Propose methods to collect data that does not yet exist Future Impact Computer Science interns will have data available in order to write new crash prediction software NDOT engineers will be able to more accurately predict the safety effects of various types of projects NDOT will be able to spend public funds more efficiently

Goals Determine the effect each project had on the crash rate for the impacted area Determine the cost to benefit ratio of each project Summarize data in a short report for quick reference Future Impact NDOT will have a better idea of which types of safety projects are more effective than others Areas still struggling with collisions and safety issues will stand out for later projects
- Sight Distance Study Goal Determine whether appropriate stopping sight distance and intersection sight distance are present Highway Junction Inventory Goal Establish an inventory of all highway junctions that have previously had traffic counts completed Collect data such as stop control, number of legs, and pedestrian accommodations
