• EDOs know who just laid off, who closed, who has training programs and
dollars.

International support through the Office of International Business Development
(OIBD) - don’t speak the language? No problem

the contacts to make this happen

municipalities, supply chain and elected officials.

  2. The economic development delivery system in Pennsylvania is local. Though there are programs created and funded by the state, for the most part you will be engaging with a local economic development organization in order to facilitate funding access and applications. In PA, the trade organization for EDOs is PEDA. PEDA is involved in advocacy at the state level and is currently pursuing these legislative and administrative priorities. PEDA supports improved coordination and a streamlined permitting process along with an expedited and collaborative inter-agency review especially as it relates to high priority economic development projects. PEDA supports funding for public and private infrastructure development through the appropriation of $30M to the IFIP and the reallocation of $125M to the BOS program. Workforce development programs that address the growing skills gap identified by Pennsylvania companies are essential to economic development. WEDnetPA, incumbent worker training, veteran entrepreneurship, and technical education programs that address skills gaps as identified by Pennsylvania companies. PEDA supports training initiatives that address the growing skills gap and develop innovative plans to integrate workforce development, economic development and job opportunities

  4. Why is it important to have a web presence on pa site search and local ED websites.
  5. If your property is uploaded to a local ED agency website in PA, it is most likely uploaded to PA Site Search as well. Brokers benefit from: Free marketing Increased traffic Direct, qualified leads Expanded lead generation Posting properties on an EDO website is just smart business – it is free, it is easy and it just may generate some leads!
  6. Communities spend time and resources to ensure that they are well positioned in website searches. This is the example from Berks County.
  7. Information on specific Communities, Labor force, Demographics, Consumer Spending, Wages, Business, Talent Pool, and Regional Data can be pulled into customized reports.

  21. Municipalities Step Up their Game Active municipal involvement is key to proactive economic development because municipalities play a critical role in the attraction and retention of companies. The willingness of municipal officials to proactively engage in determining local development and economic growth is key. Streamlining the permitting process and approaching commercial and industrial development with a business friendly message, continues to be critical in a municipalities’ ability to attract and retain commercial and industrial users.   International interest in Berks County and PA will remain high Even with the uncertainty brought about by our Presidential election, foreign companies continue to look for an east coast U.S. location and we have positioned Greater Reading to be considered by these companies. With the help of the proactive international team at the Commonwealth of PA and their global network, Berks County is well positioned to accommodate companies looking for a mid-Atlantic location with a close proximity to international airports and large metro markets, but at a much lower cost. Which is why,   Regional Partnering will be a key component to our success Berks County is grouped in a lot of different geographic categories. We can either allow this to foster identity schizophrenia or use it as a strength. We choose to use it as a strength. Identifying with the SouthCentral, SouthEast, metro Philadelphia, and Lehigh Valley allows Berks County’s diverse base of industry and cultures to become our greatest strength. We are diverse, and we are proud of it.       Site Inventory remains a high priority. Dirt is Not a Site. We need more developable and ready-to-go site inventory. This continues to be critical for Berks County’s economic growth and expansion of our commercial and industrial base. So look for us to map out our strategy for short and long term inventory pipeline.     Focus on building the workforce needs of Existing Companies Existing Berks companies are expanding and they are looking for specific skill sets. There is a general labor availability issue and companies are going to make location decisions based on where they can find and keep the best workers. Resources will be focused not only on technical education geared to our manufacturers but also on our professional service sector so that they can attract the educated talent they are seeking.
