This paper investigates how lean thinking can improve occupational safety and health in manufacturing industries. It discusses how developing countries are expanding their manufacturing industries through technology transfer but often neglect workplace safety, resulting in lost productivity from accidents, absenteeism, and equipment damage. The paper reviews literature showing little attention to lean safety practices. It also analyzes illustrative safety data from Ethiopian manufacturing that revealed over 1,600 accidents in 2012, costing over 11,000 lost work days. This suggests Ethiopian companies are unaware of how lean tools like 5S can reduce these costs. The study concludes lean occupational safety and health approaches can help manufacturing industries cut non-value-added waste from improved safety management.

This document discusses drivers of innovation at the firm level and country level. At the firm level, larger and older firms are generally more innovative than smaller and younger firms, as larger firms have economies of scale that help bear the costs of innovation. Innovation rates also vary by sector, with larger differences between small and large firms in high-tech industries. Government policies can influence the business environment and firms' ability and willingness to innovate by reducing constraints such as corruption, skills shortages, and burdensome regulations. Both internal firm decisions and the external business environment impact a country's overall innovation levels.

Systems-Based Leadership Approach (SBLA) to Human Error in Pharmaceutical Man...Ashley Turner
Human error in the pharmaceutical industry results in costly rework, lost product, and lost time to more drastic consequences that increase the risk to patients, consumers, employees, and operations. Human error reduction methods and risk management techniques are highly sought after and utilized to optimize operations, increase profits, and minimize safety hazards. This presentation distinguishes human error reduction from a person-centered and a systems-based approach in the pharmaceutical industry. The research constructs a theoretical framework of a novel approach from literature research and information gained through interviews with subject matter experts. Furthermore, the research focuses on managerial implications with this new approach and emphasizes the importance of leadership’s involvement through the Bhopal Disaster, which was the world’s worst industrial accident.

This document discusses how lean thinking can positively influence occupational safety and health in manufacturing industries. It notes that developing countries are focusing on industrial development and technology transfer but often neglect workplace safety, resulting in lost productivity and costs. The study reviews literature on lean's impact on safety and health hazards to reduce non-value adding activities. Data from Ethiopia shows manufacturing there has high accident rates with little focus on safety issues. Implementing lean occupational safety and health techniques can help control risks and reduce wastes from absent workers, compensation, and damaged equipment. More research is still needed on integrating lean with safety improvements, as awareness of its impacts on productivity remains low in developing nations.

The study examined the impact of human resource management practices and productivity of selected MNCs in Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted. The population of the study was 13,856 targeted staff of eight Manufacturing Multinational Corporation listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Stratified sampling technique was employed to select the respondents from each stratum (lower, middle and top level management). The sample of 400 was arrived at using Yamane’s formula. The sample size was expanded by 30% to make room for non-response rate. A validated questionnaire which was adopted and titled ―Human resources management practices and productivity of selected MNC’s operating in Nigeria‖ was used as the research instrument. The reliability test yielded the following Cronbach’s alpha co-efficients for the constructs: Human Resource Management (HRM) Practices = 0.72 and Productivity = 0.83. A total of 520 copies of the questionnaire were administered with a response rate of 92.3%. Simple regression analysis was used to test the hypothesis. The findings revealed that human resource management practices had a significant relationship with productivity of the selected MNCs in Nigeria (r = .043, R2 = .162, p < 0.05). This study concluded that human resource management practices had a significant impact on productivity of selected Multinational Corporations in Nigeria. It therefore recommended that MNCsshould adopt an integrated approach toward formulation and implementation of human resource management practices in their firms.

Preliminary Labor Ergonomic Analysis Applied to a Brazilian Solid Materials R...CSCJournals
The key to successfully develop a program to enhance safety and ergonomics in the workplace is an innovative process that aims to reduce workplace injury levels as well as minimize risks. This can be achieved by raising awareness and changing employees' behavior. Nowadays managers tend to strive for improved efficiency and productivity in all sectors. However, the growing demand for greater productivity has put the employees' health and well-being at great risk. Following another trend, the enterprise under study is based on the principles of solidarity economy that aims to guarantee self-management processes, focusing on the human health and wellbeing rather than financial profits. Based on the ergonomic questionnaire results and the follow-up of the co-workers' routine, some forms of improvement to accomplish their tasks were suggested.
This paper aims to address the effect of entrepreneurial orientation dimension
variables on the perceived business success in small scale manufacturing enterprises in
the text of less developing countries by taking one regional province of Ethiopia that is
Amhara regional state. In this study, the explanatory research design was employed that
is inclined towards a quantitative approach. Data were gathered from primary sources
through a standardized questionnaire from small scale manufacturing enterprises
working in the Amhara region. A blend of multi-stage sampling techniques was employed
to choose appropriate samples and binary logistic regression analysis was applied for
the purpose of data analysis. The study result showed that all five entrepreneurial
orientation dimensions (autonomy, innovativeness, pro-activeness, competitive
aggressiveness, and risk taking) variables were significant in predicting the odds of
perceived business success. However, among those strongest predictors, only three of
them (Risk Taking, Pro-activeness, and Competitive Aggressiveness) have the positive
impact on the dependent variable, whereas the remaining two variables (Innovation and
Autonomy) have a negative impact on the perceived business success of small scale
enterprise.
Safety and Health Problems in the Small and Medium Scale Metal Fabrication En...AJHSSR Journal
The objectives of this study were to identify the types of small and medium scale metal
fabricating enterprises operating in Willowvale and to assess the existing hazards in these enterprises so as to
analyse the effectiveness of the occupational safety and health management practices being implemented. The
study used both quantitative and qualitative approaches with the research subjects being selected using stratified
random sampling and purposive sampling methods. Questionnaires, interviews, observations and occupational
hygiene measurements were used in data collection. The analysis of the collected data through the use of SPSS
version 11.5 and Microsoft Excel 2007 revealed that the majority of small and medium scale metal fabricating
enterprises were operating outside the requirements of the Zimbabwean OSH laws and regulations by failing to
have their premises registered under the Factories and Works Act. OSH management structures were virtually
non-existent and the implementation of OSH programs was predictably poor and minimal. Employees were
exposed to numerous workplace hazards in the form of excessive noise, heat stress, hazardous metal working
chemicals, awkward work postures to name just but a few. In conclusion, several recommendations to improve
the state of OSH in this economic sector were proposed. These included tailor made and deliberate interventions
being required from the regulatory authorities where the main thrust of such interventions will be on awareness
and training campaigns so as to develop and cultivate the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes toward
sustainable OSH practices in metal fabricating SMEs.
Identification of Occupational Health Hazards and Assessment of Intervention ...ijtsrd
Occupational hazards present a major public health problem resulting in serious social and economic consequences that could be prevented if appropriate measures are taken. The focus of this paper is the identification of occupational health hazards and assessment of intervening strategies in the working environment in Minna metropolis of Niger state, Nigeria. Specific objectives are to ascertain the prevalence of occupational health hazards, to identify occupational health hazards common among workers in the small, medium, and large enterprises, and to assess the intervention strategies put in place by the management of such enterprises in addressing such hazards. This is necessitated given that the study of this kind is scarce in the area. Hence the is a felt need to carry out this research. Arising from this, the cross sectional design was adopted with the use of a questionnaire as the main instrument for data collection from a sample size of 385. Out of the sample size, only 222 questionnaires were returned for analysis. The data collected was analysised using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The result was statistically interpreted. The study revealed that the prevalence level of workplace related problems among workers in Small and Medium enterprises is significantly high, there is a significant association between the levels of occupational hazards and workplace related health problems, there is little or no Health Intervention Support among respondents in Small, Medium and large enterprises in Minna, Niger State. The study recommends among others that workers should be properly trained and educated on the use of work related equipment to avoid health related accidents. Public health preventative services such as the provision of flu vaccines, and protective equipment may be one way of supporting workers in small and medium enterprises with acute seasonal episodes of health problems. Embedded machine learning-based road conditions and driving behavior monitoringIJECEIAES
Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.

A review on techniques and modelling methodologies used for checking electrom...nooriasukmaningtyas
The proper function of the integrated circuit (IC) in an inhibiting electromagnetic environment has always been a serious concern throughout the decades of revolution in the world of electronics, from disjunct devices to today’s integrated circuit technology, where billions of transistors are combined on a single chip. The automotive industry and smart vehicles in particular, are confronting design issues such as being prone to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Electronic control devices calculate incorrect outputs because of EMI and sensors give misleading values which can prove fatal in case of automotives. In this paper, the authors have non exhaustively tried to review research work concerned with the investigation of EMI in ICs and prediction of this EMI using various modelling methodologies and measurement setups.

DEEP LEARNING FOR SMART GRID INTRUSION DETECTION: A HYBRID CNN-LSTM-BASED MODELgerogepatton
As digital technology becomes more deeply embedded in power systems, protecting the communication
networks of Smart Grids (SG) has emerged as a critical concern. Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3)
represents a multi-tiered application layer protocol extensively utilized in Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA)-based smart grids to facilitate real-time data gathering and control functionalities.
Robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are necessary for early threat detection and mitigation because
of the interconnection of these networks, which makes them vulnerable to a variety of cyberattacks. To
solve this issue, this paper develops a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model specifically designed for intrusion
detection in smart grids. The proposed approach is a combination of the Convolutional Neural Network
(CNN) and the Long-Short-Term Memory algorithms (LSTM). We employed a recent intrusion detection
dataset (DNP3), which focuses on unauthorized commands and Denial of Service (DoS) cyberattacks, to
train and test our model. The results of our experiments show that our CNN-LSTM method is much better
at finding smart grid intrusions than other deep learning algorithms used for classification. In addition,
our proposed approach improves accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving a high detection
accuracy rate of 99.50%.
