Nikki Davis The effects of choosing consumption today versus c.docxvannagoforth
Nikki Davis
The effects of choosing consumption today versus consumption in the future is while you have what you want/need for the moment, you will not have in the future. By choosing a little of consumption today and saving or investing a little, provides for consumption in the future. So by only using what we need now we can save and be able to consume in the future. This affects us daily as we chose whether to spend or save, for example for trips, new homes, or good retirements. The government has a difficult battle when it comes to consumption today vs. consumption in the future. There are unlimited wants by the citizens and limited funds/ resources to provide. They must be good stewards of funds and make good long-term choices. So that may come down to restricting consumption today to make for more consumption in the future.
Manuel Garza
The question is asked if I gave up consuming today and invested for tomorrow what kind of future would I have. Well, to answer that, If I saved today and didn't spend what I didn't need to live, I would have more money for my future. That is saying I save in a standard savings account. I would be able to take trips in the future if I saved enough, having kids means I would be able to send them to college. Now on a bigger scale like the government, they have the same chooses we have but on a bigger scale and with more people to complain when they don't plan or spend money the way the people want it to be spent. The government cuts spending today to invest for tomorrow, they take existing money and invest it to make more money and they say no to the wants of its citizens. I said wants and not needs. An example would be cutting universal health care for all because there is no means to pay for everyone in the budget now. The government cuts defense spending to put money into Medicaid or social security. I don't know if this example is true but to me, that would be an example of cutting spending now to help in the future.

Week 3 Lecture Notes
Chapter 5 – Teaching, Standards, and You
If we were in a traditional classroom setting, I would bring in state and national standards to give everyone an idea of what is meant by the word, “ standards.” But, since this class is online, I would like all of you to review National and State standards online. You will find links to these under the “Web Links” button. Also, throughout this lecture, you will find web links.
This chapter begins by posing the question, "What should I teach?" That's a very important question because it can have many different responses! So, how do we know what to teach? How do we have all children, across the country, regardless of gender or economic status, to have access to the same information?
Standards: statements of what students should know and be able to do; help answer questions about what to teach children and about what they should learn.
What are local, state, and national standards?
· • Local: Refers to the immediate community, your school district.
· • State: Refers to the state’s standards.
· • National: Refers to the standards that are expected of all schools across the country. They are designed to be applicable to all children, regardless of individual state or local standards.
Today, we are moving towards standards-based education (SBE), focusing on basing the curriculum (all of the experiences children have while in school), teaching, and testing on local, state and national standards. Specifically, states are moving towards using the Common Core Standards.
Foundations of the Standards Movement
Education reform is not new; three federal initiatives played a large role in popularizing our need for standards-based education:
The Reagan Administration’s 1983 report, A Nation At Risk, was the first document that called for such reform. I would like you to familiarize yourself with this document. You will not be tested on it, but it will give you an idea of its historical importance. Please read the sections entitled (click on) A Nation at Risk,Findings and Recommendationshttp://www.ed.gov/pubs/NatAtRisk/index.html
Goals 2000 was an act designed to ensure that all students reached high levels of achievement. For a summary of Goals 2000, please visit http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/envrnmnt/stw/sw0goals.htm
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was the former federal law affecting education from kindergarten through high school. NCLB emphasizes state and district accountability, mandates state standards for what children should know and be able to do, puts in place a comprehensive program of testing in grades three to twelve, and encourages schools to use teaching methods that have demonstrated their ability to help children learn. Table 5.1 discusses some pros and cons of NCLB. I am sure you've heard of NCLB; most teachers, as your text states, "love to hate" it! In particular, due to NCLB, the rise in standardized testing occurred and this, as many educators w.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

28. Objective
Look deeper at the words, numbers,
and experiences that define poverty.
Understand statistics that show the
relationship between education level,
income level, and unemployment.
Reflect on what we can do about
poverty.
30. Why is Poverty important?
Some Questions to Consider:
Why does the U.S. measure how
many people are in poverty?
What social services are provided for
people in poverty?
How could someone get out of
poverty?
31. We’re going to look at three
definitions of poverty:
The words in the federal definition
from the U.S. Census Bureau
A video about the experience of rural
poverty from World Vision
The numbers from that define the
federal poverty guidelines
32. The Words: What is Poverty?
The United States Census Bureau offers the
following definition:
Following the Office of Management and
Budget's (OMB) Statistical Policy Directive 14,
the Census Bureau uses a set of money income
thresholds that vary by family size and
composition to determine who is in poverty. If a
family's total income is less than the family's
threshold, then that family and every individual
in it is considered in poverty. The official poverty
thresholds do not vary geographically, but they
are updated for inflation using Consumer Price
Index (CPI-U). The official poverty definition
uses money income before taxes and does not
include capital gains or noncash benefits (such
as public housing, Medicaid, and food stamps).
34. What did you see or hear in this
video?
“World Vision has the ability to bring those
ideas into a community in a culturally sensitive
way and help leaders adapt their approaches
to poverty in a way that is more effective,
leading people out of generational poverty.” –
Ruston Seaman

This chart demonstrates the relationship between education level, unemployment, and income.
