This document provides an overview of the Research in Progress (RIP) database and how to enter projects and submit reports. It discusses how state DOTs, US DOTs, and UTCs can enter individual project records through a data entry form or batch submittal. It notes that the RIP database is used to enter, update, and remove projects, while the TRID database is used solely for indexing final reports. The document encourages leaving completed projects in RIP until final reports are indexed in TRID to avoid gaps. It also outlines additional requirements for UTC projects and how consortiums can manage entries. Lastly, it reviews the process for submitting reports to the TRID database for indexing.

3. Entering Projects to RIP
State DOTs, US DOT, UTCs
– Enter individual projects records on data entry form
– Submit an electronic file of projects – batch mode submittal

Relational Database – look-up tables for organization and
individual names
– Listing of UTCs by center name
Source Agency
– Determines ownership of record
– Automatically entered based on login
– DOT and UTC records for the same project are merged into one record, for
which the DOT becomes the Source Agency (thus the “owner” of the
record)

4. Entering Projects to RIP, cont’d
• RIP users enter, update and remove their projects from the RIP
Database only.
• All creation of and updates to a project record must be done in RIP
*Project records cannot be edited via the TRID Database
• A goal of RIP is to identify research so leave completed project records
in RIP until the final report is indexed in TRID so that there is no gap in
availability of the research
• All UTC project records are reviewed by a TRIS indexer/abstractor
including application of Transportation Research Thesaurus (TRT) terms
before becoming available in RIP

5. UTCs use of RIP

• UTCs receive only one login for their institution
• The head UTC for a consortium enters and maintains
consortium project records; head UTCs receive two logins
• Generic email addresses are preferred for login credentials

6. Submitting Reports to TRID
• What is entered into TRID
Research reports (not websites, newsletters, press releases etc.)
including UTC research reports
• Submit published reports
Form on TRID website trid.trb.org/submit.aspx
Email publications/reports as attachment, or a link to the report to
tris-trb@nas.edu
Publications are indexed by professional indexers and abstractors
• Acceptance of research reports for TRID
