A good app is effective, cost-effective, feasible, profitable, user-friendly, safe, relevant, and usable. It also clearly shows any side effects and dose responses. However, many current health apps lack evidence on their effectiveness, safety, and how they were developed. Developing apps through a scientific process that involves users can help address these issues. This includes conceptualizing designs based on theory and user input, testing prototypes, and iterative development and field testing. The goal is to produce evidence-based, innovative health apps that can be safely implemented and improve outcomes.
CHC15 - EHR adoption in a european environment and public management hospital...Carlos Sousa
SOURCE:
Invited speaker for CERNER HEALTH CONFERENCE, Educational Session, held during Oct 11-14 in Kansas City (MO) - US.
ABSTRACT:
After 13 years under private management, Hospital Prof. Fernando da Fonseca (HFF) committed to invest a solid EHR strategic approach aligned with best practices, due to management shift as public management hospital within the NHS network. HFF focused on creating a Clinical Commission for information that could support and lead the change on workflow and mindset of the hospital culture. This team combines the knowledge and experience of multidisciplinary roles, designing a EHR model that fully responds to the needs. Thus ensuring a successful phased implementation which started in the emergency department and was then deployed throughout the rest of the hospital. After three years of project, the hospital has achieved a high level (superior to 85%) of EHR adoption and has proven outcomes in the delivery of quality of care and Social ROI (e.g. direct data interoperability with medical emergency before hospital admission, algorithm implementation to improve organ donor and collection, integration with private clinics for outsourcing auxiliary services, including Lab and radiology prescriptions and results/reports). HFF continues to strongly work on this project and are dedicated to implementing their roadmap with the short term aim of achieving HIMSS Stage 6.

The document discusses how healthcare providers can reduce data management costs through storage economics. It describes the unique challenges providers face with explosive data growth, inefficient data access, compliance regulations, and strict budgets. Storage economics helps optimize costs by identifying all storage costs, defining superior architectures, and aligning strategies to standards to reduce total ownership costs and improve return on investment. Providers can benefit from applying these principles to justify investments and develop economically superior solutions to manage healthcare data more efficiently.
Technology based healthcare in India faces several opportunities and challenges. While technologies like telemedicine, medical imaging, and health information systems have benefits, their utilization remains limited due to issues like high costs, lack of trained personnel, low awareness among the population, and insufficient infrastructure support. Emerging areas that could enhance healthcare if properly implemented include AI, robotics, digital libraries, and personalized online health systems. However, overcoming limitations such as vendor lock-in, high training requirements, and interoperability issues will be important for the successful adoption of these technologies in India.
The document discusses Singapore's healthcare system and efforts to implement an electronic health record (EHR) system nationally by 2010. Key points include:
- Singapore has a relatively affordable yet high quality healthcare system serving a population of 4.59 million people.
- Efforts are underway to address challenges of an aging population and rising costs through healthcare IT initiatives like the EMR Exchange (EMRX) system.
- The Ministry of Health aims to implement a national integrated EHR system by 2010 to improve care quality, safety and efficiency through clinical data sharing across providers.

Health facility design for infection controlSA FHE
The document discusses guidelines for designing health facilities to promote infection control through proper ventilation and indoor air quality. It emphasizes the importance of passive ventilation strategies like open windows, as studies have shown closed environments concentrate more pathogens. Design approaches should consider the local climate and prioritize natural ventilation over fully mechanical systems where possible. Material selection, surface finishes, and planning layouts also impact infection control and need to balance hygiene, acoustics, and antimicrobial resistance. An integrated, multidisciplinary approach is advocated to create sustainable, healthy hospital buildings.

No matter how fast we construct buildings the time it takes from planning to use, means that the building is dated at the time it is handed over.
This time frame will vary according to the nature and circumstances of the contract and or construction.
In private healthcare it will average 24 months (2 years)
In public healthcare its longer 36 months – 60 months (5 years)
There is no value judgement simply a comment of the process, and regardless of cause or the actual time frame it is simply out of date by the time of handover.
This paper explores explores the notion that out of date hospitals ( crocodiles) are better than hospitals that are extinct (dodo).

The Ultimate Guide in Setting Up Market Research System in Health-TechGokul Rangarajan
How to effectively start market research in the health tech industry by defining objectives, crafting problem statements, selecting methods, identifying data collection sources, and setting clear timelines. This guide covers all the preliminary steps needed to lay a strong foundation for your research.
"Market Research it too text-booky, I am in the market for a decade, I am living research book" this is what the founder I met on the event claimed, few of my colleagues rolled their eyes. Its true that one cannot over look the real life experience, but one cannot out beat structured gold mine of market research.
Many 0 to 1 startup founders often overlook market research, but this critical step can make or break a venture, especially in health tech.
But Why do they skip it?
Limited resources—time, money, and manpower—are common culprits.
"In fact, a survey by CB Insights found that 42% of startups fail due to no market need, which is like building a spaceship to Mars only to realise you forgot the fuel."
Sudharsan Srinivasan
Operational Partner Pitchworks VC Studio
Overconfidence in their product’s success leads founders to assume it will naturally find its market, especially in health tech where patient needs, entire system issues and regulatory requirements are as complex as trying to perform brain surgery with a butter knife. Additionally, the pressure to launch quickly and the belief in their own intuition further contribute to this oversight. Yet, thorough market research in health tech could be the key to transforming a startup's vision into a life-saving reality, instead of a medical mishap waiting to happen.
Example of Market Research working
Innovaccer, founded by Abhinav Shashank in 2014, focuses on improving healthcare delivery through data-driven insights and interoperability solutions. Before launching their platform, Innovaccer conducted extensive market research to understand the challenges faced by healthcare organizations and the potential for innovation in healthcare IT.
Identifying Pain Points: Innovaccer surveyed healthcare providers to understand their difficulties with data integration, care coordination, and patient engagement. They found widespread frustration with siloed systems and inefficient workflows.
Competitive Analysis: Analyzed competitors offering similar solutions in healthcare analytics and interoperability. Identified gaps in comprehensive data aggregation, real-time analytics, and actionable insights.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensured their platform complied with HIPAA and other healthcare data privacy regulations. This compliance was crucial to gaining trust from healthcare providers wary of data security issues.
Customer Validation: Conducted pilot programs with several healthcare organizations to validate the platform's effectiveness in improving care outcomes and operational efficiency. Gathered feedback to refine features and user interface.

The Importance of Black Women Understanding the Chemicals in Their Personal C...bkling
Certain chemicals, such as phthalates and parabens, can disrupt the body's hormones and have significant effects on health. According to data, hormone-related health issues such as uterine fibroids, infertility, early puberty and more aggressive forms of breast and endometrial cancers disproportionately affect Black women. Our guest speaker, Jasmine A. McDonald, PhD, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at Columbia University in New York City, discusses the scientific reasons why Black women should pay attention to specific chemicals in their personal care products, like hair care, and ways to minimize their exposure.

Valid replacement criteria
i. Equipment will be replaced only when one of the following valid reasons has been fulfilled:
a. it is worn out beyond repair (has reached the end of its natural life);
b. it is damaged beyond repair;
c. it is unreliable – faulty, old, unsafe;
d. it is clinically or technically obsolete;
e. spare parts are no longer available; and
f. it is no longer economical to repair.
and one of the following valid reasons has also been fulfilled:
g. utilisation statistics are available to show that it is still required; and
h. a demonstrated clinical or operational need still exists.
ii. Equipment will not be replaced simply because:
it is old;
staff do not like it; and
a newer model has arrived on the market.
Judging when it is time to condemn equipment
Senior maintenance staff need to study the equipment, and judge:
whether the equipment fulfils any of the valid replacement criteria (see above);
whether the equipment has outlived its (internationally/locally) advised typical “lifetime”;
the equipment’s track record and state of health, as documented in its service history
records; and
whether it will be necessary to override the average expected lifespan and condemn the
equipment early, or even to extend the lifespan of the equipment.
