PCSB’s role in addressing discipline

• PCSB assesses discipline policies when new applicant groups apply for a
charter.
• When schools are up for charter review, PCSB works with the school on
revising charter goals, including goals around discipline.
• Schools’ discipline policies are posted on PCSB’s website.
• PCSB shares discipline policy data with public entities.

PCSB’s role in addressing discipline (cont.)
•

PCSB staff reviews discipline policies and checks for the following:
*Clear explanation of infractions & consequences
*Clear explanation of due process
*Explanation of disciplinary steps for students with disabilities

•

PCSB analyzes discipline data monthly to look for trends, and alerts
schools when they are an outlier with their rate of disciplinary
incidences.

9/10/13

17
Discipline
Key Takeaways
1. Expulsion rates are down across the sector.
2. More schools use short-term suspensions than long-term
suspensions.
3. PCSB continues to alert schools when their discipline rates are
out of the norm, and encourages schools to adjust their practices
to ensure more students are kept in school.
