Prof. Daniel Lang discusses the grand challenges facing cities in creating sustainable habitats. As the global population becomes increasingly urbanized, with 70% projected to live in cities by 2050, cities will be critical in addressing issues like climate change, energy usage, and social equity. Some key challenges discussed are the urban heat island effect and increased energy demands associated with urban density. The document also examines sustainability principles like zero carbon emissions and sustainable land use, as well as the need for resilience and adaptability in cities. Overall, the talk emphasizes that cities must invent and plan for sustainable solutions to shape a desirable future global environment.

Curt F. Dale Guest Lecture by Bob Berkebile FAIA and Rod Kruse FAIA, BNIM
9/9/2011 | 4:30pm-9:00pm in Kocimski Auditorium
Any list of accomplished, influential environmentalists and preservationists includes Bob Berkebile. Highly regarded by fellow professionals, Berkebile focuses on improving the quality of life in our society with the integrity and spirit of his firm's work. In 2009, he received a Heinz Award from Theresa Heinz and the Heinz Family Foundation for his role in promoting green building design and for his commitment and action toward restoring social, economic and environmental vitality to America’s communities through sustainable architecture and planning. He was also third on a list of the Top 5 U.S. Individual Role Models for green and sustainable design in the 2009 DesignIntelligence Sustainable Design Survey.
Berkebile will present "The Ultimate Design Problem: Sustaining Human Life" at approximately 5:30 p.m. He says, "The competition between our growing human family and the resources and decreasing natural capital that support human life are now undeniable. Our current design doctrine for community living is not sustainable. Do we have the capacity to design a new community model that ensures long-term vitality for our children and Spaceship Earth? Our grandchildren's lives depend on our answer."
If the vision of the social sector is that it will solve our world's most "wicked" problems, the social sector is set up wrong. In this presentation, Alison Gold of Living Cities, proposes open sourcing social change as a strategy for reorienting the sector away from the advancement of organizations, and toward maximizing impact. Closing presentation to the DC Lean for Social Good Summit on March 26, 2014.

Persuasive Cities for Sustainable Wellbeing @ MIT Media LabAgnis Stibe
TEDx talk - http://bit.ly/TEDxp
Publication - http://cp.media.mit.edu/s/Stibe_2016f_PCSW_CC_Larson.pdf
Can you imagine a city that feels, understands, and cares? Many of us live and work in an urban environment, however we often are not aware of how hugely our behavior is influenced by the environment. Future cities will alter human behavior in countless ways and Socially Influencing Systems (SIS) will play an important role in making urban spaces more livable and resource-efficient by addressing current environmental problems and enabling healthier routines. This talk will focus on discussing ways for reshaping our current environments and designing future "persuasive cities" to help people become healthier and to acquire sustainable lifestyles. As one of the examples, this talk will provide insights into a recently conducted, large-scale study called Biking Tourney. For six weeks, it engaged 239 employees of 14 organizations from the Greater Boston area, including Google, Miller Dyer Spears, Volpe, iRobot, Boston Children’s Hospital, FastCAP Systems, Cazena, and others. Altogether, the tourney participants rode 29,374 miles on their daily return trips to work.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
