3. Who
we are?
Shannon Royden-Turner
Shannon holds a Masters in Urban Infrastructure Design and
Management from the University of Cape Town, is a Certified
Demartini Method® Facilitator through the Demartini Institute,
a qualified Biomimicry Practitioner through biomimicrySA,
has worked extensively as an Urban Design Practitioner
and holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of
KwaZulu Natal.
Specialisms: Urban Infrastructure Futures, Urban Strategy,
Ecological Infrastructure, Infrastructure Policy Design,
Behavioural Change.

4. Richard James MacCowan FRSA
Richard is the Founder & Managing Director of Biomimicry UK
| Innovation Lab. He has a background in real estate finance
and development from Heriot-Watt University, and a Masters
in Urban Design from the Leeds School of Architecture with
design awards from from both Gillespies and and the
Urban Design Group for his work on biomimicry and urban
design.
Specialisms: Behavioural Economics, Urban and
Landscape Design, Systems-Thinking, Biology,
Engineering, Design.
Claire Janisch
Claire Janisch is Founder of BiomimicrySA and a Director
of the Biomimicry for Africa Foundation. Claire has a MSc
Chem-Engineering in the field of Environmental Process
Engineering (Industrial Ecology) and is both a graduate of
and has been a lead trainer for the Biomimicry Professional
Program.
Specialisms: Strategic Planning, Environmental
Technology, Sustainable Energy Planning, Integrated Waste
& Pollution Management.

5. Prof Julian Vincent
A world-renowned biologist and engineer, Julian is a
former director of the Biomimetics and Natural
Technologies Centre (University of Bath) and has
worked with some of the world’s leading design and
engineering practices on projects ranging from packaging,
through engineering and architecture. He is a consultant
to Exploration and is currently working with NASA on
complex problem-solving.
Specialisms: Complexity Modelling, Biology, Engineering,
Materials Science.
Dr Chris Hassall
Chris is an evolutionary biologist and ecologist at the
University of Leeds in the Ecology and Evolution Research
Group. His primary interests lie in the biological impacts of
climate change and urbanisation. It is vital to evaluate the
capacity of different species to respond to environmental
change, as those species that cannot respond face an
uncertain future.
Specialisms: Ecosystem Services, Water Management,
Ecology, Landscape Environmental Assessments.
