Introduction of Author
R. K. Narayan was born on 10 October 1906 and passed away in 2001.
In his long career he published fourteen novels, over two hundred short
stories, a memoir, two travel books, innumerable essays, and two
plays. His first novel was Swami and Friends (1935). His last published
work was Grandmother's Tale (1992), which in many ways reinforced
the concerns and motifs of his writing in his long career—themes like
exile and return, education (in the widest sense of the term), woman
and her status in the society, myths and the ancient Indian past,
tradition and modernity, Malgudi and its culture, appearance and
reality, the family and so on.
Short Story Crime and Punishment
It's a humorous story. This story truly confirms the old adage "spare the rod and spoil the child". It emphasizes
the truth that too much care and parenting spoils the child. This story approximates the comical situation
between a teacher and his naughty pupil. The boy was preparing for an arithmetic test. The test was scheduled
and the teacher was preparing the naughty student for the test. A student provokes an angry teacher by
repeating a wrong answer. Finally, the teacher beats the little boy. When the boy started crying, the teacher was
very upset. The boy's parents were against the punishments. They are afraid that the boy's parents would know.
They were very rich. The boy was their only child and they didn't like being beaten. The teacher knew this truth
and tried to console the boy. The boy gave the teacher a condition. If he let him play, he wouldn't tell the truth.
Finally the teacher obeyed and the boy wanted him to play with him. The teacher was very tired and the engine
of the train was also damaged. Then the boy wanted him to fix it. When the teacher was not ready to correct it,
he demanded a story from him. The teacher was very tired after repeating many stories. Then the boy threatened
the teacher again and ran to his parents. The teacher ran after him too. But he could not reach him. The teacher
then stumbled onto the portico stairs. It was at that time, the parents reached there. The teacher got very scared
and wanted to confess everything. Then the boy's father asked about the test and the boy was very afraid and
hid behind his parents. He looked desperately at the teacher. The teacher sympathized with the boy and replied
that he won the test. The boy was very happy and grateful to the teacher. The teacher also told them about the
game they played to make him happy. So this story brings so much laughter to the readers.
Role of Parents in Education
The importance of parents for education is obvious from the direct links between people’s family
background and their probability of success in and through education. Genetic factors, wealth and family
networks are important for children’s education outcomes.Parent’s principal role in the family is the
education and the bringing up of their children, then the main obligation of their children is to study harder
and properly. For this aim, they need to be well instructed on how to study, based upon rules and principles
of an appropriate learning and studying. This approach would open to them the doors of the world of a
behaviorist attitude towards the work, making possible for them to get to know better the relevance of
working as one of the main behaviorist elements of the human kind.
The development of the child is in fact an overall child’s personality formation. The parents as educators
must be able to recognize the basic features of their child, interests, temperament and especially the child’s
emotional features regarding the child’s character.
The child’s personality formation has resulted to be constructed mostly based upon
child’s socialization in general. The socialization process as such, for sure nowadays
represents the most important one of all other processes involved in his formation as a
child. Thus, the child commences to socialize within a given society since the early
stage of his/her childhood at parents’ home, circled by parental atmosphere and the
relationship between family members in general. In this entourage, the child makes the
first steps in the society, manifesting the basic features of behavior, which as such are
the fundamentals of further social development and integration of the child in a given
society.
Parental Involvement and parent behaviors related to the child’s schooling that can be
observed as manifestations of their commitment to their child’s educational affairs.
Extant literature relating to educational outcomes has shown that outcomes of
education, especially at the basic level, hinges at par on the parents’ involvement as it
does for factors including school tuition, school climate. This is largely because
confidence and motivations of children toward education at the basic level of education
is heavily linked with the level of the parental involvement in the child education.
A kid’s education starts from home. Parents are their first teachers
and they have a key role in shaping up their character. A balance of
education at home and school molds a student’s actual learning. Be
a helping hand in their educational journey and travel with them with
true inspiration. Parental encouragement had played a crucial role in
successful students. Their role is not limited to home but
involvement in school activities too.
.

4. No over scheduling 14. Prioritize child’s learning

6. Give constructive criticism 16. Devise fun ways to learn
7. Help with home assignments 17. Talk with your kid
8. Prepare them for tests 18. Encourage active learning
9. Reward them for results 19. Help them relax
10. Go for educational trips 20. Be a good friend
10 Ways Parents Play a Role in the Education of Their
Children
1. Be a role model
Kids would be easily inspired by what their parents do. So it would be good to be a role model in their learning phase.
Parent’s are a kid’s first teacher and so learn the first things together at home.Show them how exciting and meaningful a
school life can be if they give out their best. Inspire them to learn novel elements in and out of school with friendly reminders
and guidance.
2. Read together
Doing things together with parents give them a sense of support and confidence. Reading the lessons
together is one of the best ways to be close with the child’s learning at school. This not only improves their
vocabulary but invokes interest in them to read more.It is also a good idea to visit the library together and
share quality books to help them get additional knowledge than classroom lessons.
3. Oversee child’s activity
It is important to have an eye on the child’s activity in school and home. Their general habits are closely linked
to how they perform in their studies. So give timely advice and correct any abnormal behavior right from the
childhood days and inspire them to be good citizens.Help them to be more organized with their daily routine
and find enough time for the lessons.
4. No over scheduling
It is not a good idea to over schedule them with learning activities at home. They are spending about half of
their day at school. So help them schedule their extra learning and homework time at home without burdening
them.Balancing the time between lessons, play time and rest is important to have a quality student life.
5. Provide pleasant atmosphere
Parents should make sure that the kids are provided with a peaceful and pleasant atmosphere at home.It is
good to avoid discussing family problems in kids presence and don’t create a mess at home with unnecessary
quarrels.
6. Give constructive criticism
If you notice that your kid is not performing well or giving less importance to studies, correct them at the
beginning itself. However, it is not good to spoil their peace of mind with ill words. Have some patience and
give only constructive criticism if you notice any downsides. Make them understand what is right and
wrong rather than simply blaming them.
7.Help with home assignments
Help with home Giving good support to kids in their studies would really lift their spirit for learning.Show it
with small gestures such as helping them with home assignments or projects. However, it is not advised
to do every lesson for them and let them play.Do it together and help them with some tips and guidance in
doing the assignments better.
8. Prepare them for tests
When it is their exam time, don’t leave them alone with their lessons. Help them to prepare for the tests
with good guidance and support. You may even conduct mini tests at home before the actual test to lessen
their exam worries and tensions. You may also give additional help with the lesson areas in which they
are weak.
9. Reward them for results
Giving good motivation is important for a kid to perform better with studies. So don’t hesitate to reward
them if they come up with some good results in the tests. This also gives them the spirit to perform better
every next time. However, keep a limit and it is not good to over shower them with gifts for an average
performance which fades away their killer instinct.
10. Go for educational trips
It is a good idea to go for educational trips during the holidays. Include destinations that have some
relevance with what they are studying to help them have a better understanding of the lessons.Occasional
trips to museums and zoos would also help them to interact with the nature and learn new things.
