Editor's Notes

  1. These quotes identify the importance as well as the challenge of inhabiting the digital organisation and the need for students to adapt – the first quote is taken from the Edinburgh’s Digital Learning Bootcamp Josie Ahlquist is a student affairs educator based in the states & has undertaken a considerable amount of work on student digital leaders
  2. Digital World is a complex world and this the world students have to inhabit when they enter the world of work - they have to get to grips with a range of digital products and processes, there is no guarantee that they will enter into an organisation that using Microsoft it may use Google or open products as well as the challenge of presenting themselves online
  3. The approach I wanted to take was workplace skills how they could be developed in learning & teaching as well as independent research
  4. The genesis of the resource was 2 frameworks – JISC Digital Capabilities Framework, which we repurposed for the DigitalU resources at Staffordshire
  5. Resilience being able to adjust to quickly to a time of change in a digital, become digital world to become digitally resilient - JISC and ourselves here at Staffordshire identified that we need to develop digital capabilities to adapt and turn to our advantage the disruptive world of digital – we know that digital is disruptive JISC have stated that this can be addressed by enhancing student’s capabilities – which relates to digital literacies – the first definition is JISC’s the 2nd is adapted by myself in relation to employability
  6. Another reference point was Josie Ahlquist’s work on digital leadership where she has identified these competencies
  7. So I created this definition for digital leadership When entering the workplace students need more than skills they need develop behaviours to adapt which I have called digital leadership. Students developing leadership behaviours that are linked to digital capabilities so that can make best use of digital in the workplace – how can we take this idea of resilience further I would like to propose that students need to digital leader in the workplace in order to be digitally resilient, this digital leadership as a behaviours not the role of leader, and applies some of the ideas of Josie Ahlquist
  8. I repurposed these for Digital Leadership which formed my wireframe
  9. Then I used libguides and our DigitalU template – I repurposed some our library content, curated some and when we eventually got the ok with Lynda.com used thsata
  10. I have now started to develop an online guide provide resources that will help students to develop these behaviours - The aim of the framework is to develop something that can be repurposed in different context, either by using contextual examples or activities I have ambitions for a course or MOOC I recently presented at the UKSG conference that used the framework to develop a short online course in collection management much of the content could be reused.
  11. Despite being designed for students it appeared too academic or teacherly
  12. I changed the terminology and the headings – this is relatively new
  13. People are genuinely interested in skills development - & I have observed that some are integrating and some are not roles and responsibilities issue – teachers, careers, the library?
  14. The whole concept of digital leadership digital skills makes more sene
  15. I did think is it needed, I have had a go at changing the audience, and possibly redesign but for me it only works if we integrate – maybe some work over the summer
  16. In it’s simplest sense resilience is adapting easily to change this is a picture of my niece who was fascinated by hat she showed resilience by trying it on realising it was too big to see anything and then pushed it up and eventually took it off so she could see again, but at least she had tried it – I think that has been me
  17. Still likes the larger things in life but she can see a little bit more clearly now. & so can I
