- 2. Introduction • What is 2 Dimensional Art? • “Art limited in composition to the dimensions of depth and height is called 2D art. This includes paintings, drawings” (Quora:2018) • What is Greek Art? • The art of ancient Greece is usually divided stylistically into four periods: the Geometric, Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. The Geometric age is usually dated from about 1000 BC, although in reality little is known about art in Greece during the preceding 200 years

Where would you find 2 D Greek Art? • Walls – Fresco’s & Mosiacs • Urns: • Storage & transport: amphora, pithos, pelike, hydria, pyxis, • Mixing, mainly for drinking parties “orgies”, Krater & Dinos, • Jugs and cups: Kylix also just called cups, Kantharos, Phiale, Skyphos, Oinochoe and Loutrophoros, • Oils, perfume & cosmetics: Lekythos, Aryballos & Alabastron.

Frescos ( Paintings) & Mosaics • Greeks valued paintings even above sculpture probably because of the narrative (story it could provide) (Hellenistic era most prominent) • Wax based painting the most popular/ tempera was also used • Perishable nature of materials used as well as unrest caused many examples being lost to us • Was used mainly to decorate tombs and graves as a narrative piece of art. • Mosaics and Frescos were quite colourful and was known Polychromy in connection with Ancient Greek Art . "Ever since the earlier Minoan civilization on Crete, where fresco was developed, fresco painters mixed their pigments with water and applied them to a fresh lime surface. The Periods of Greek Art • The history of ancient Greek pottery is divided stylistically into five periods: • the Protogeometric from about 1050 BC • the Geometric from about 900 BC • During the Protogeometric and Geometric periods, Greek pottery was decorated with abstract designs, in the former usually elegant and large, with plenty of unpainted space, but in the Geometric often densely covering most of the surface. • The style was usually a silhouette • It usually showed narrative scenes regarding: • Funeral rites and rituals, or battles, presumably representing those fought by the deceased

Periods of Greek Art Continued • the Late Geometric or Archaic from about 750 BC • the Black Figure from the early 7th century BC • and the Red Figure from about 530 BC • Black Figure added red and white details by incising for outlines and details, first found in Corinth • Early 700 BC later into Attica • It flourished until 600 BC. • The red-figure technique, invented 530 BC, reversed this tradition, • pots being painted black and the figures painted in red. • Red-figure vases replaced the black-figure style. Sometimes larger vessels were engraved as well as painted. • Erotic themes, heterosexual & male homosexual. • 320 BC figurative vase-painting ceased in Athens Greek centres, with the polychromatic frescos and mosaics became popular.
