• The terms classic or classical came into use in the 17th century to describe the
arts and culture of the ancient civilisations of Greece and Rome.
• These ancient civilisations in art, architecture and literature are referred to as
classicism.
• The Classical period witnessed the continuation of red- and black-figure painting
techniques on ceramic objects.
3. WHAT IS CLASSICAL ART?
• Classical Art encompasses the cultures of Greece and Rome and endures as the
cornerstone of Western civilization. Including innovations in painting, sculpture,
decorative arts, and architecture.
• Classical Art pursued ideals of beauty, harmony, and proportion, even as those
ideals shifted and changed over the centuries.

4. CLASSICAL GREEK ART (480 – 323

• Began after the greek victory over persians (479 B.C.)
• It is known for thousands of years that the art of the ancient Greek has been
held as the standard or measure by which all later art will be judged.
• Classical Greek art itself was a product of previous influences. Remnants of
cultures pre-dating the Greeks could be seen in early statues.
• Over Greek’s Golden Age or the Classical Period of ancient Greece was the time
when the Greeks achieved new heights in art, architecture, theater, and
philosophy.
5. CLASSICAL GREEK ARCHITECTURE
Ancient Greek architecture came from the Greek-speaking people whose culture flourished on the
Greek mainland, the Peloponnese, the Aegean Islands, and in colonies in Anatolia and Italy for a
period from about 900 BC until the 1st century AD, with the earliest remaining architectural works
dating from around 600 BC.
Three Orders of Greek Architecture
• Doric – A simple, heavy column without a base, topped by a plain
capital that has no ornamentation
• Lonic-used an elaborate base and capitol in the form of
scrolls
• Corinthian-the most elaborate of the orders. It is elongated
with leaves.

• Greek vase painters used foreshortening to illustrate depth, and Agatharchus of

Roman art spans the centuries of the Republic and of the later Empire that governed the lands of
the Mediterranean, Europe, and the British Isles from antiquity until the beginning of the Dark Ages.
• Roman Art refers to visual arts that were designed in ancient Rome, during the time of the
Roman Empire.
• Roman Art comprises of architecture, sculpture, and mosaic works. Sculpture and figure painting
were regarded as the highest forms of Roman Art.
• Roman art took on attributes from Greece, Egypt, and the Etruscans. Romans were practical
people while the Greeks were idealistic.

Roman architecture is known for concrete-domed buildings, the innovative use of
the arch, the amphitheatre design, the basilica, the triumphal arch, and
residential apartment blocks.

15. THE DEFFERENT BETWEEN
CLASSICAL
GREEK AND ROMAN ART:
The main difference between Greek and Roman art was the
purpose the art was meant to serve; the Greeks had a great
appreciation for aesthetic beauty and the philosophical theory
behind it. Whereas Roman art was used to illustrate wealth and
were more so decorative.
