3. 1840 Nasce a Catania da una famiglia nobile. 1856/57 A solo 16 anni scrive il suo primo romanzo: Amore e patria . 1861/62 Realizza il suo secondo romanzo I carbonari della montagna . 1863 Pubblica la sua terza opera Sulla laguna . 1865 Lascia Catania per trasferirsi a Firenze, da poco diventata capitale politica del nascente regno d’Italia, dove frequenta il salotto letterario dell’Ongaro e conosce Aleardo Aleardi e Luigi Capuana . 1866-1871 Passa dal romanzo storico al romanzo psicologico scrivendo Una peccatrice e Storia di una capinera. 1872 Verga lascia Firenze e si trasferisce a Milano dove risiederà per circa 20 anni. A Milano frequenta il caffè Biffì ed entra in contatto con Giovanni Prati, Arrigo Boito, Roberto Sacchetti ed altri scrittori. Durante questo periodo scrive: Eva, Eros, Nedda e Tigre reale. 1877 Giovanni Verga matura l’interesse per una narrativa di carattere sociale e dallo stile spiccatamente impersonale ,grazie alla frequentazione dell’amico Luigi Capuana che in quell’anno si trasferisce a Milano. Dal 1873 al 1889 Scrive in quel periodo Rosso Malpelo inserito nella raccolta: Vita dei Campi, i Malavoglia, Novelle Rusticane, Mastro Don Gesualdo 1890 Viene rappresentata in teatro la sua opera , Cavalleria Rusticana musicata da Pietro Mascagni. 27-01-1922 Dopo aver ricevuto pubblici riconoscimenti ed essere stato nominato senatore del Regno d’Italia, muore a 82 anni stroncato da una trombosi celebrale.

11. Lingua La lingua utilizzata dall’autore è principalmente l’italiano, lasciando spazio qua e là a qualche espressione parlata tipica del dialetto siciliano. Sintassi La sintassi è semplice, ricca di similitudini e metafore; frequenti sono i dialoghi, frequente è l’uso del discorso diretto. Usa uno stile impersonale in modo che il lettore si trovi faccia a faccia col fatto nudo e schietto; inoltre adotta il punto di vista della gente ,evita cioè di esprimere il suo personale giudizio e i suoi sentimenti.
12. Pur ispirandosi ad un fatto storico,Verga non vuole documentare fedelmente gli eventi, infatti omette di precisare nomi di persone ed è molto sommario anche nell’indicazione di luoghi e tempi della vicenda perché intende conferire alla novella un valore esemplare, vuole farne l’espressione di una legge di natura, valida in ogni tempo e in ogni luogo e dimostrare che “all’aria ci vanno i cenci”.
