DEFINITION
• Psychotropic drugs are substances that alter the mental behavior or
experience.
AMPHETAMINE
• It is a drug of abuse
• It produces a euphoric effect 10 times that of cocaine.
• It is taken orally as pills or as injectables or inhalation of crushed
powder.
• The effect of a single dose lasts for 10-16 hours
• Fatal dose: 150mg to 2gm
• Fatal Period: 2-4 hours
Medicolegal Importance
Liquid Gold:
• 40% of amphetamine is excreted unchanged in urine.
• This excreted urine is golden yellow in colour.
• Drug addicts often refer to the urine passed by an amphetamine user
as Liquid gold which is collected  Sold in underworld market
illegally.
• This liquid gold is taken orally to get the euphoric effect
Psychedelics (Hallucinogens)
• Psychedelics are substances which produce an alteration in the
environmental awareness while maintaining the capacity to recognize
that what he is experiencing is not real.
• This experience is purely sensory with visual hallucinations.
• This hallucinatory experience is commonly referred to by the slang
name as “TRIP”
• This trip may be a Good trip or bad trip
• A good trip is one where he experiences pleasant visual
hallucinations.
• A bad trip is one where he experiences disturbed visual hallucinations
which leave behind a bad impact in the mind and often recur even
when not under the influence of a psychedelic substance.
• This recurrence is called flashback phenomenon.
• Examples of Psychedelics are LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide),
Ecstacy, Phencyclidine, and cannabis.
LSD (Lysergic acid diethylamide)
• It is a Psychedelic substance
• This experience is purely sensory with visual hallucinations.
• This hallucinatory experience is commonly referred to by the slang
name as “TRIP”
• This trip may be a Good trip or bad trip
• A good trip is one where he experiences pleasant visual
hallucinations.
• A bad trip is one where he experiences disturbed visual hallucinations
which leave behind a bad impact in the mind and often recur even
when not under the influence of a psychedelic substance.
• Each trip lasts for 1 hour when taken in right dosage (200
micrograms)
• Fatal dose: 14mg.
• Death is due to respiratory failure.
• The after effects may persist for several weeks.
• The individual during this period may become violent and kill
someone or may commit suicide.
Flashback Phenomenon
• It is most commonly associated with LSD abuse.
• Usually a person gets a good trip in which one experiences pleasant
visual hallucinations.
• However it may also be a bad trip where he experiences disturbed
visual hallucinations which leave behind a bad impact in the mind and
often recur even when not under the influence of a psychedelic
substance.
• This recurrence is called flashback phenomenon.
• This usually occurs after few weeks or months after intake of LSD.
• These delayed repeated recurrences may lead to eccentric behavior,
suicidal or homicidal tendencies.

• Anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines (diazepam)
