THE KING OF HAY-ON-WYE
I Everybody has heard of England’s Queen Elizabeth, but how many people know about King Richard, self-
proclaimed king of Hay-on-Wye, a small British town in Wales on the English-Welsh border?
II Hay-on-Wye, or Y Gelli in Welsh, is located almost 300 kilometres west of London. It used to be an unremarkable
country town, like many others, until Richard Booth returned to his hometown in 1961. He decided to make Hay a
“town of books”, and opened a second-hand bookshop in the old fire station.Other booksellers soon started
businesses as well.
III But Richard felt that the town needed more help than it was getting from the British government. So, he bought the
town’s ruined castle and on 1st April, 1977, he declared that Hay-on-Wye was an independent kingdom. He named
his horse as prime minister and set himself up as the king, calling himself Richard Coeur de Livre, meaning “Heart
of Book” in French. He began issuing “passports” and some years later in 2000, he established the Hay House of
Lords.
IV Today, the town has become a famous literary centre, with approximately one million books in more than 30
bookshops. Many sell second-hand orrare books, or specialise in particular subjects:Lion Street Books deals with
anything connected to boxing, Boz Books sells only books by Charles Dickens and Mostly Maps specialises in
maps. The Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, established in 1988, is now held every spring. Writers from all over
the world come to read their work or talk to the public; recent speakers include Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South
Africa and the musician Sting. The festival also includes musical performances and, from 2010, it will take over
and run a separate summer jazz festival nearby.
V King Richard’s “independent nation” has obviously flourished, but how is his relationship with Queen Elizabeth II?
Very good,it seems. In 2004, Richard was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) by Her Majesty, for his
contribution to British tourism.
