The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
2. Concept of Value :
Values- an abstract, nebulous term prone to varying
interpretation.
In DMRC- Culture Building
4 Pillars of work culture :
- Professional Competence,
- Integrity,
- Health,
- Service Orientation
3. VALUE AND MORALS
Values are the principles by which we make
decisions about right and wrong, good and bad. They
also tell us how people treat each other, how groups
and organizations conduct their business and what
is important to the organization.
Moral have a greater social element to values and
tend to have a very broad acceptance. Morals are
far more about good and bad. We judge others more
strongly on morals than values. A person can be
described as immoral, yet there is no word for them
not following values.
4. Ethics
Ethics are moral principles that govern a
person's behaviour or the conducting of an
activity. It also refers to study of good and bad,
right and wrong, just and unjust actions of
people. Ethics in business is also the same, if
dishonesty is immoral in society, then any
business person practicing a dishonest act is
treated as indulging in unethical actions.
5. Sources of Ethics
Right from childhood we all nurture values
through parents/ family members/ friends/ school/
college teachers/ books/ hobbies etc.
Family Ethics- * Love * Compassion * Care *
Discipline * Loyalty * Help / Morality etc.
Corporate Ethics- Discipline, Honesty, Integrity,
Respect, Customer delight, Commitment, Sense
of belongingness, Pride & Passion in job, Working
with smile.
6. Ethics in real sense
When evaluating one’s goals and objectives, a
vital question must be asked: What is your
highest aspiration?
Wealth
Fame
Knowledge
Popularity
Integrity
7. If integrity is second to any of the alternatives, then
it is subject to sacrifice in situations where a choice
must be made. Such situations will inevitably occur
in every person’s life.
The real asset of an organization is not its material
resources, but people with right values.
Ethics in real sense
8. Ethics in real sense
The erosion of values and ethics is one of the
major concerns of today's society. Human beings
are similar in every generation; it is probably the
increasing stress, fast pace of life, keen
competition and overvaulting ambition to achieve
too much in too little time that has made today's
man seemingly less principled than his
ancestors.
9. "Earlier, people would say: 'How can we speak a
lie-we have a family to look after.' Today, they
say: 'How can we speak the truth-we have a
family to support'".
This explains, but does not excuse us of
responsibility for the widespread decline in
values: even in today's turmoil and stress, people
of integrity are still around.
Ethics in real sense
10. There's an ancient story about a frog, which,
having been told by his friend about an elephant,
went on bloating his tummy to confirm from his
friend if the cited creature was that big. Then, he
exploded. We must remember that everyone has
a place. A frog need not try to become an
elephant to gain importance since in the scheme
of this universe, he is already as important as an
elephant.
Ethics in real sense
11. Why is Ethics Important
Ethics corresponds to basic human needs. Every
person desires to be ethical not only in his private life
but also in business affairs. Moreover, most people
want to be a part of an organisation which they can
respect and be proud of, because they perceive its
purpose and activities to be honest and beneficial to
the society.
Values give the management credibility with its
employees. Organisational ethics, when perceived
by employees as genuine, create common goals,
values and language. Values are supposed to be a
common language to bring the leadership and its
people together.
12. Why is ethics important
An ethical attitude helps the management make
better decisions, i.e., decisions which are in the
interest of the public, their employees, and the
company’s own long term good.
Ethics and profits go together. A company which
is inspired by ethical conduct is also profitable.
Value – driven companies are most likely to be
successful in the long run.
14. Ways of Resolving Ethical Issues
There are number of steps to resolve ethical
problems:
One should consider three well-known principles to
resolve an ethical issue: Moral Idealism, Intuitionism
and Utilitarianism.
(i) Moral Idealism –it postulates certain acts are good
and other are bad. Pursue those acts which are
good and avoid bad ones.
(ii) Intuition – it leaves to the individual to sense the
moral gravity of the situation. If a person feels that
his or her motives are good and do not hurt anyone
then he or she is taking an intuitive approach to
morally difficult situations
15. Utilitarianism – it seeks to establish the oral locus not
on the act or the motives but on the consequences.
If the consequences represent a net increase in the
society’s happiness, the act is morally right.
Sort out ethical priorities before problems arise.
Prioritisation shall help consider alternatives when
on e is not under stress.
Write down pros and cons in the form of a balance
sheet. The balance sheet approach helps decision
making by presenting information in an organised
way.
