The study of space in communication is
called proxemics.
Every society has different norms for the
use of space in communication.
Non-verbal signals which are mutually
understood by the sender and the receiver
originate from many sources.
You will have larger houses,bigger cars
and more spacious offices.Office space is
generally allotted on the basis of person’s
position in an organization.
Space has a direct connection with
familiarity.You do not sit next to the
stranger on the bus if other seats are
unoccupied.
But if you find your friend on the bus,you
will surely sit next to her even if most of the
seats on the bus ivided the space into four
types. are empty.

Dimension’ has d
Intimate distance for embracing,
touching or whispering
Close phase - less than 6 inches(15 cm)
Far phase – 6 to 18 inches(15 to 46 cm)
 Personal distance for interactions
among good friends or family members
Close phase – 1.5 to 2.5 feet(46 to 76 cm)
Far phase – 2.5 to 4 feet(76 to 120 cm)
Close phase – 4 tSocial distance for
interactions among acquaintances
o 7 feet(1.2 to 2.1 m)
Far phase – 7 to 12 feet(2.1 to 3.7 m)
Public distance used for public
speaking
Close phase – 12 to 25 feet(3.7 to 7.6 m)
Far phase – 25 feet(7.6 m) or more.
INTIMATE SPACE: Intimate space is
suitable for highly confidential talks &
decisions concerning sensitive matters.
 Only special people like our family members,
relatives & close friends enter this space.
 We often speak in whispers or at a low pitch
to them.
 Handshake, a pat on the back, eye contact,
etc.
 Are very commonly used in this space.
PERSONAL SPACE: Personal space
extends from 18 inches to 4 feet.
This distance is reserved for more than
just a casual friend.
However, it is a no-contact distance.
We have normal conversation with our
close friends, colleagues and visitors.
SOCIAL SPACE: Social space extends from
4 feet to 12 feet.
 Business or formal conversations can be
carried on in this space.
PUBLIC SPACE: This is the distance
reserved for public speakers which extends
beyond 12 feet.
 Communication in this space is highly formal
and objective.
 High pitch of voice is used so as to be heard
by a much larger group.
