I4MS 2015: Enhancing digital transformation in manufacturing SMEs
I4MS 2015 will explore the progress achieved by the I4MS initiative and the impact participation has had on SMEs.
To date I4MS has achieved over 80% industrial participation. An initial participation of 80 SMEs has now grown to 150 as momentum continues to build. Success is also evident with SME participation in projects leading to the adaption of new technologies and approaches. I4MS phase two will take this success further through additional projects supported by a budget of approximately EUR 35 Mn.
At I4MS 2015 participating SMEs will present their experiences, results achieved and impact made. They will explain how they have benefited and what the adaption of innovative ICT has meant for their business. European support does not just exist at EU level.
Action at regional level supported through programmes such as Smart Specialisation present the good opportunity to reach out to and involve the diverse landscape of European SMEs. At I4MS 2015 participants will be introduced to a new activity designed for such outreach – digital innovation competence centres – and an outlook towards the next stage of I4MS.
I4MS is a EUR 77 Mn initiative of the 'Factories of the Future' partnership designed to support the adaption of innovative ICT by SMEs. Through seven integrated projects in four key areas, I4MS brings manufacturing SMEs directly into research and innovation projects, introducing them to innovative technologies and supporting the adoption of such technologies.

Paving the way to telco-grade PaaS
Most of the challenges that need to be overcome to make PaaS is suitable for telco relate to the need for additional features that telco applications typically require in terms of latency, security, and availability. PaaS provides the building blocks for automated testing, continuous deployment, as well as supporting the DevOps approach, and as such simplifies the development process and reduces time to market.
The convergence of IT, telecoms, and other domains brings benefits to all industries. PaaS is a cloud-based service model that frees up developers to focus on how to deliver the best business solution. In PaaS, the platform delivers services that can be used to develop applications, differing from the traditional method of development in which developers need to create the entire software stack.
By using microservices – the construction or deconstruction of applications into small parts – developers can build solutions in a technology-agnostic manner, choosing just the right network protocol and solutions for the application at hand. This approach enables each part of the system to be developed, maintained, deployed, executed, upgraded, and scaled independently.
Avoiding dependencies enables technology choices to be made on a per-microservice basis. As new technologies become available, they can be implemented appropriately without the need for a synchronized cross-microservice upgrade. As a result, each microservice can evolve at the right pace in a way that is most appropriate for a particular service.
The technology gaps that need to be closed to pave the way to telco-grade PaaS include tenant isolation and trace support. But there are many more, and this article covers how they together with microservices architecture can be combined to maximize the benefit.

ATMOSPHERE was invited to be a speaker at HPC2018 workshop. Francisco Brasileiro, Brazilian Coordinator of ATMOSPHERE and Professor at Federal University of Campina Grande, will present a talk on “Fogbow: A Middleware for the Federation of IaaS Cloud Providers”.
Francisco Brasileiro presented the design and implementation of a middleware that allows the fast and non-intrusive deployment of very large federations of IaaS cloud providers. The use of the middleware in production systems will be also discussed, providing concrete evidences of its suitability

April 2015, Non Stop Systems, the consortium leader, present CloudStar, a private cloud controller full open source (Debian-Openstack-Ceph-Zabbix...) ready to use in 5 weeks for 30 K€. Those two components bring full automation and remote administration to allow the deployment of distributed clouds toward large areas. French local public administration and SME's start experimentation of the first nuage components.

Scalable Service-Oriented Middleware over IP
ABSTRACT
Due to the increased amount of communication in cars, a reliable and easy to use middleware system for automotive applications becomes a popular research field. In this paper, we review a recent approach: the Scalable Service-Oriented Middleware over IP (SOME/IP). We present current tech- nologies and how SOME/IP differs from them. We point out how SOME/IP is ordered into the ISO/OSI layer model and discuss its service orientation. We also present the ad- vantages and disadvantages of SOME/IP. In the end, we analyze its timing behavior and whether it is suitable for automotive software or not.
