33. Festivals
Norsk Rakfiskfestival (Norwegian fermented Trout Festival)
is held at Fagernes on the first weekend of November every year.
This traditional event has been organised for the 17th time.
Number of visitors increases every year, 25 000 people experienced the
festival in 2012.
Over100 artists exhibit their unique quality products in the streets –
concerts in the evening
In 2012 we have seven festivals visited by 70.000 people

53. The pastoralisme /transhumance in Valdres
Mountain farm culture and scenery
260 active mountain farms
Mountain farming is still part of life in Valdres.
During summer, the farm families often move up in the mountains with
their livestock in order to take advantage of the lush mountain pastures
for their dairy and meat production.
Valdres is the region with most active mountain farms in all of Northern
Europe. Approx. 300 are still in operation. The scenery in major parts
of the valley is still very much marked by this farming system.
The beautiful surroundings, the people and the animals will leave
you peaceful and relaxed.
62. Domestic reindeer farming is also common across the Northern Cap, i.e. Northern Norway, Sweden,
Finland and Russia. This type of farming is a common occupation of the Sami people, but in the
mountain areas further south in Norway, as in Valdres, domestic reindeer are also farmed by "non-
Sami" locals. The reindeer are herded, and are moved between winter and summer pastures.
There are also wild reindeer herds in the areas close by, and an important part of the herding is to
make sure that the two types do not mix. Valdres has about 12.000 domestic reindeer.
