J. R. D. TATA
Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata was a
pioneer aviator and important
businessman of India. He founded
India's first commercial airline, 'Tata
Airlines', in 1932, which in 1946 became
Air India, now India's national airline.
He was famous for succeeding in
business while maintaining high ethical
standards - refusing to bribe politicians
or use the black market.
Due to his ceaseless hardwork he
developed himself into a very
respectable and popular business
tycoon.
His vast industrial empire includes
TCS, TATA MOTORS, TATA TEA,
TITAN INDUSTRIES, TATA
COMMUNICATIONS, VOLTAS, etc.
I believe that if Mahatma Gandhi is the political
face of India, JRD TATA is the business face and
equally respectable.
It is no small achievement to have headed lakhs
of workers in general and 100s of executives, not
letting ego clashes mar the company's operations,
finding middle grounds between extreme opinions.
His leadership saw it all through.
He had respected the opinions of others on all
occasions and had even suppressed his own
feelings while acceding to the ideas of others. He
was particular about leading others with affection.
JRD Tata received a number of awards. He received
the Padma Vibhushan in 1957. He also received the
Guggenheim Medal for aviation in 1988. JRD Tata
was awarded India's highest civilian honor, the
Bharat Ratna-one of the rare instances in which this
award was granted during a person's lifetime. In the
same year, JRD Tata was also bestowed with the
United Nations Population Award.
JRD Tata died in Geneva, Switzerland on November
29, 1993 at the age of 89. On his death, the Indian
Parliament was adjourned in his memory-an honor
not usually given to persons who are not Members
of Parliament.
