• Born on December 28, 1937
• Ratan`s childhood was troubled, his parents separating in the
mid-1940s, when he was about seven and his younger brother
Jimmy was five.
• Tata began his schooling in Bombay at the Campion School and
the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, and finished his secondary
education at the Cathedral and John Connon School.
• Graduated with a degree in Architecture and Structural
Engineering from Cornell University in 1962.
• Did Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business
School in 1975.
• Turned down job in IBM to join his own business.
• In 1962 he joined Tata Group.

Career at TATA
1962: Joined the Tata Group.
1971: He was appointed as the Director-in-charge of the
National Radio & Electronics Company Ltd.
1977: The lock out was imposed for 7 months and the
venture did not survive.
1977: Ratan Tata was entrusted with the Empress mill.(The
textile mill controlled by Tatas)
1981: Ratan Tata was named as the Chairman of Tata
Industries,groups and the holding companies.
2000: Tata Tea, now Tata Global Beverages, acquired the
Tetley group, the world's second largest manufacturer and
distributor of tea. Tetley is the largest tea company in the
UK.
Career at TATA
2002: The group acquires a controlling stake in
Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. VSNL was founded in
1986 and was the first Indian PSU to be listed on
the New York Stock Exchange.
2003: Tata Consultancy Services became the first
Indian software company to cross $1 billion in
revenue. The company went public a year later.
2004: Tata Motors is listed on the New York Stock
Exchange. The company also acquires the heavy
vehicles unit of Daewoo Motors the same year.

2007: Tata Steel successfully acquires Anglo-Dutch
company Corus, the second-largest steel maker in
Europe.
2007: Tata four wheeler Tata elegante was launched.
2008: The smallest car Nano was launched costing Rs.1
lakh, which was told and highlighted in the press
meeting in the year 2007.
2008: Tata Motors acquires the Jaguar and Land Rover
businesses from Ford, and forms a new company,
Jaguar Land Rover.
2012: Tata Global Beverages and Starbucks form a joint
venture, Tata Starbucks Ltd, and open their first store in
Mumbai.
2012 : Stepped down as the Chairman of Tata Group at
the age of 75.

FIRM DETERMINATION
• Ratan Tata was appointed the director-in-
charge of National Radio and Electronics
Company (NELCO). The company held
barely 2 % of the market share which
ultimately led to its collapse.
• Later again, he was given charge of the
Empress Mills in 1977 which was in bad
shape. Due to a weak economy and a
prolonged workers’ strike, the Empress
Mills floundered and was finally closed.
• These two 'failures' haunted Ratan for
decades. His track record was held
suspect even when he took charge in
1991 but he never looked back, and
ultimately proved his critics wrong.
CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE
• Ratan Tata used his excellent
innovative vision in Titan Edge
watches which developed the
thinnest watch in the world and
in Nano, the cheapest car in the
world.
• The Tata group also developed
Tata Swach-a home water
purification device at low cost
that operates without electricity.

troubled and demand was low.
But Tata went on to prove
everyone wrong and today, both
