Gestalt theory claims that there are two types of problem solving: reproductive, which draws on past experiences, and productive, which involves insight and restructuring the problem. Reproductive problem solving can hinder finding a solution because people may fixate on known aspects of a problem and be unable to see novel interpretations that could lead to a solution. The whole is different than the sum of its parts according to Gestalt theory.
