(Teacher demonstrates puppet show)
Good afternoon friends, I am Noddy. I have come to
meet you. Do you like your school? And do you like
mathematics? Let me tell you a secret. Friends I am
very bad at mathematics .In my last exam I was just
able to score 17 out of 40 in Math. My friend Bunny
Is simply great. He has topped the class with 19 out
of 40.But now I have decided to study hard and
score better next time. O.K. Friends bye. I have to go
to study now.
Good afternoon students, have you met Noddy
just now? Have you heard his score in mathematics?
17/40,
19/40 are certain types of numbers called as
fractions. Today let us study fractions and their
various types in the chapter ‘Fractions’.
Teacher writes the title on chalk board.
Students I have this apple and I have to give this to
Priya. What will I do? I will give whole apple to Priya.
If suppose Priya shares it with Sanskruti what will
Priya do? She will cut the apple in half so that they
both get 1 out of 2 pieces. How much will she get if
she further makes 2 more pieces? How much will
each one get? So what are fractions?
Now what do I have?
Yes chocolate. You all are very fond of it, isn’t it? If I
give 3 parts of it to Aditya I can say that 3/8th of the
chocolate has been given to Aditya .All the numbers
discussed above such as ½, ¼, 3/8 are quantities that
express a part of the whole. So now let us read the
definition -
In fraction a/b ,
A is the numerator and b is the denominator.
Hence , Fraction=Numerator/Denominator
Remember every fraction must always be termed in
its lowest terms or we can say that Numerator &
Denominator should not have any other common
factor except 1.Fractions such as 2/4 , 6/24, 13/104
have more than 1 common factors, whereas
fractions like 3/11 , or 23/71 are having no common
factor .

Types of Fractions
Proper Fractions.
Improper Fractions
Mixed fractions
Like Fractions
Unlike Fractions
Teacher distributes worksheets having drill examples
to students and asks them to solve the examples
with their partner to ensure co-operative learning.
Teacher later asks students to give answers.
After studying the concept of fractions let us study
the types of fractions.
Now I will show you 2 groups of fractions Grp.A &
Grp.B tell me what is the difference in these 2
groups in terms of numerator & denominator?
We can infer that grp.a has numerator smaller than
denominator .So all such fractions are called as
Proper Fractions.
Give examples of proper fractions
Now what will we call other group?
Group B has numerator greater than denominator or
numerator is equal to denominator, so this group
will be called as group of Improper Fractions.
Now give examples of improper fractions.
Now let us study the next type of fraction.
In this fraction 3 is whole number and ¼ is what kind
of fraction? Proper fraction. Such type of fractions
are called as Mixed fractions
In mixed fraction 23 2/5=23+2/5
& 7 3/8=7+3/8
Conversely we can also say that 19+ 3/5=19 3/5 &
7 +3/8= 7 3/8
Now let us study these fractions carefully,
Fractions having the same denominator but different
numerator are called Like Fractions.
If denominator of given fractions are not same , the
fractions are called Unlike Fractions .
What is the difference between like & unlike
fractions?
-Identify N. & D. from
following fractions-
35/71, 99/103, 51/83,
19/20.
-71/110 can be written as?
-54/103 can be written as?
-Are the following fractions
termed in their lowest
terms-
64/72, 100/200, 81/90,
17/19, 7/11, 25/100,
3/99,21/55, 49/53.
Group A-4/7, 3/8, 101/235,
14/17, 9/13
Group B- 7/5, 25/12,
181/62, 9/2, 3/2, 51/17,
3/3, 27/27
3 ¼
23 2/5=23+2/5 &
7 3/8=7+3/8
19+ 3/5=19 3/5 &
7 +3/8= 7 3/8
7/5, 1/5, 4/5, 13/5 etc.
5/9, 7/8, 13/19, 21/23, 1/3

Now we will study the last type named as equivalent
fractions. If 2 or more fractions have same value
they are called as equivalent fractions.
Teacher distributes worksheets having drill examples
to students and asks them to solve the examples
with their partner to ensure co-operative learning.
Teacher later asks students to give answers.
So, students today we have studied the concept of
fractions, we have also studied terms of fractions
and 5types of fractions.
Students we have seen that fractions are usually
converted into their lowest form. What care do we
take while doing this?
Do we need to be careful & accurate only at the time
of solving examples in mathematics?
Where else can we be accurate?
How will you inculcate this habit in ownself?
Solve exercise 5(A) as homework.

References: Mathematics textbook std. 5th, EXPERIENCE: Teaching Points/Content Teacher Activity & Procedure Support System/CBW Set Induction Link Statement Statement of Topic and Scope Presentation- Sub unit 1- Concept of fractions. (Teacher demonstrates puppet show) Good afternoon friends, I am Noddy. I have come to meet you. Do you like your school? And do you like mathematics? Let me tell you a secret. Friends I am very bad at mathematics .In my last exam I was just able to score 17 out of 40 in Math. My friend Bunny Is simply great. He has topped the class with 19 out of 40.But now I have decided to study hard and score better next time. O.K. Friends bye. I have to go to study now. Good afternoon students, have you met Noddy just now? Have you heard his score in mathematics? 17/40, 19/40 are certain types of numbers called as fractions. Today let us study fractions and their various types in the chapter ‘Fractions’. Teacher writes the title on chalk board. Students I have this apple and I have to give this to Priya. What will I do? I will give whole apple to Priya. If suppose Priya shares it with Sanskruti what will Priya do? She will cut the apple in half so that they both get 1 out of 2 pieces. How much will she get if she further makes 2 more pieces? How much will each one get? So what are fractions? Now what do I have? Yes chocolate. You all are very fond of it, isn’t it? If I give 3 parts of it to Aditya I can say that 3/8th of the chocolate has been given to Aditya .All the numbers discussed above such as ½, ¼, 3/8 are quantities that express a part of the whole. So now let us read the definition - In fraction a/b , A is the numerator and b is the denominator. Hence , Fraction=Numerator/Denominator Remember every fraction must always be termed in its lowest terms or we can say that Numerator & Denominator should not have any other common factor except 1.Fractions such as 2/4 , 6/24, 13/104 have more than 1 common factors, whereas fractions like 3/11 , or 23/71 are having no common factor . Puppet Fractions Concept of Whole ½ ¼ A fraction is a quantity which expresses a part of the whole.
  • 3. Drill Work No.-1 Share –Pair Activity Sub unit-2 Types of Fractions Proper Fractions. Improper Fractions Mixed fractions Like Fractions Unlike Fractions Teacher distributes worksheets having drill examples to students and asks them to solve the examples with their partner to ensure co-operative learning. Teacher later asks students to give answers. After studying the concept of fractions let us study the types of fractions. Now I will show you 2 groups of fractions Grp.A & Grp.B tell me what is the difference in these 2 groups in terms of numerator & denominator? We can infer that grp.a has numerator smaller than denominator .So all such fractions are called as Proper Fractions. Give examples of proper fractions Now what will we call other group? Group B has numerator greater than denominator or numerator is equal to denominator, so this group will be called as group of Improper Fractions. Now give examples of improper fractions. Now let us study the next type of fraction. In this fraction 3 is whole number and ¼ is what kind of fraction? Proper fraction. Such type of fractions are called as Mixed fractions In mixed fraction 23 2/5=23+2/5 & 7 3/8=7+3/8 Conversely we can also say that 19+ 3/5=19 3/5 & 7 +3/8= 7 3/8 Now let us study these fractions carefully, Fractions having the same denominator but different numerator are called Like Fractions. If denominator of given fractions are not same , the fractions are called Unlike Fractions . What is the difference between like & unlike fractions? -Identify N. & D. from following fractions- 35/71, 99/103, 51/83, 19/20. -71/110 can be written as? -54/103 can be written as? -Are the following fractions termed in their lowest terms- 64/72, 100/200, 81/90, 17/19, 7/11, 25/100, 3/99,21/55, 49/53. Group A-4/7, 3/8, 101/235, 14/17, 9/13 Group B- 7/5, 25/12, 181/62, 9/2, 3/2, 51/17, 3/3, 27/27 3 ¼ 23 2/5=23+2/5 & 7 3/8=7+3/8 19+ 3/5=19 3/5 & 7 +3/8= 7 3/8 7/5, 1/5, 4/5, 13/5 etc. 5/9, 7/8, 13/19, 21/23, 1/3 etc.
  • 4. Equivalent Fractions Drill Work No.-2 Share –Pair Activity Summarization Reflection Action Assignment Now we will study the last type named as equivalent fractions. If 2 or more fractions have same value they are called as equivalent fractions. Teacher distributes worksheets having drill examples to students and asks them to solve the examples with their partner to ensure co-operative learning. Teacher later asks students to give answers. So, students today we have studied the concept of fractions, we have also studied terms of fractions and 5types of fractions. Students we have seen that fractions are usually converted into their lowest form. What care do we take while doing this? Do we need to be careful & accurate only at the time of solving examples in mathematics? Where else can we be accurate? How will you inculcate this habit in ownself? Solve exercise 5(A) as homework. ½, 2/4,5/10, 8/16,20/40 Drill Work 2- Fill in the blanks- 1) 2/3is a ---------------- fraction 2) 3/2 is a ---------------- fraction 3) -12/-12 is a ---------------- fraction 4) The value of 5/5=? 5) 19/23 , 32/23, 72/23 are ----------- fractions 6) 3/19 & 5/52 are ---------- - fractions 7) 12/48 & 100/400 are --- -------- fractions 8) 5 ½ is a ---------------- fraction where 5 is ------ ----1/2 is ------------- 9) 3 6/7 can be written as- --- + --------- 10) A fraction is always expressed in --------- terms
